I think that's not entirely true, each university will have their own policy on how and when tuition fees are paid. You don't want to find yourself in the worst case scenario where you have a place but can't fund it.
My university sent me an email stating that they wanted the fees paid pretty early in the first semester.

True - but when you walk in with car keys in your hand and pass over your driver's license as proof of ID, and they stare at it for ages trying to work out your date of birth, you feel a bit like "THE FACT I HAVE A PINK DRIVING LICENSE CLEARLY MEANS I'M OVER 15!"

NotADumbBlond
I was speaking to one of them the other day about how he got in (Manchester 5 year). He was quite helpful in that he talked about what experiences he had and so on. He said he first phoned up the uni, the uni told him that he needed 6 months experience in a care environment. Unfortunately he did not have this, however he was part of his university football team for two years and he had volunteered for the odd charity positions at uni, such as working with St Johns Hospice. In addition to this when he applied, he phoned up a hospital (in july) and he was able to get a volunteering job there, so he was also able to put that in his PS. By the time he had sent off his UCAS app, he had three months of working in the hospital, his uni activities (biology societies, med soc etc) and 1 week shadowing a GP (I think it was his friends GP, hence why he was able to shadow a doctor so quickly). Manchester was the only uni that actually accepted him.
My other mate at Newcastle just told me that Newcastle had also told him that he needed at least some long term commitment in a care environment. Again, he only realised he wanted to go into medicine after his second year at uni (I think he was doing BioMedSci). He said after his second year exams had finished, he had found a job in a hospital (mental health ward). This was his only experience in a medical field. But he said that a lot of the nurses at the hospital were really nice to him and one of them even wrote him his reference. Again, he said that in his PS he drew attention to his university work, his year abroad and his experience with working in a hospital.
For me as long as I get into a university, that is all I care about to be honest. Besides, I like all the universities that I have applied to so fingers crossed!! Have you decided whether you want to apply now?Law student. 1st/2.1
