Applying to the 5 year course as a GRADUATE :) sept 2011
Hiya,
is anyone else applying to the 5 year course as a grad? does anyone know if th 4 year or 5 year course is more competetive?
Applied as a school leaver, didnt get in (ukcat 680). got the grades at school, predicted 2.1 in biomed at kings, just deciding which uni to apply to. will make final decisions when i have my ukcat score, but was wondering if anyone had any tips on unis? like what particular medical schools look for/prioritise?
or if anyone has got in after doing a biomed degree any tips would be greatly appreciated!

thanks

Not a biomed degree here, engineering. You can see where I applied in my signature. For Sheffield, the key is an excellent UKCAT. Then you have a great chance at interview. Leicester interview a lot of people- so the key here is to be good at interview. This is a very friendly one anyway so you might not know how it goes at all.
I applied for 2 5 year and 2 4 year. I think Grad entry is more competitive (and many here will tell you the same), so I spread my chances.
Good luck!Thinking for 2011 about-
Warwick GEP- interview- rejected FINALLY!
Sheffield 5 yr- interview and offer!
Southampton GEP- unsuccessful (not rejected you understand, no, not at all, just unsuccessful)
Leicester 5 yr- interview and offer!
UKCAT- Av 795
V 680 Q 900 A 810 DA 790
*Does booty dance- this time next year I'll be studying medicine*

Just wondering how you will fund yourself for the 5 year programme ?

Saving and working! The student maintenance loan pays the tuition fees and lets me have a little left over. I'll obviously have to work during the course as well.

Ah I see! Lucky you you're starting the course before the 2012 system comes into effect. I guess this won't be possible for people starting the course afterwards.

Don't think I am boasting, but I could afford it if I applied next year as I have a sharesave scheme at work that would bring in most of the tuition fees. But as I am leaving before that it all works out about equal.

Sounds like BirdUK might have been one of the lucky ones if applying for 2012 entry! As far as things go at the minute, unless something changes drastically, 5 year courses will be off limits for the majority of graduates for 2012 entry :-(

Agreed, I think the majority of Graduates don't see the 5 year course as an option anymore. If they scrap the NHS bursary from the 4 year accelarated course I am pretty sure there will be a huge decline in the number of graduates applying.

Lol, my planning of the rest of my life is currently hanging on this! I've done most of my application, just waiting for the bomb to be dropped!
Some uni's have a set quota for the amount of graduates that they accept onto 5 year courses, whereas with others I think you're just directly in competition with the school leavers.
I'd assume though, with a momentus decline in graduate applicants... the calibre of those applicants still able to apply will surely be lower. So I would have thought that unless you can still perform to the same standards as the school leavers, you wouldn't be that much better off.
I don't know though for sure, maybe someone else would care to enlighten us...
