Exclamation Good work experience or a bit risky?

    Hi Everyone,

So in 2006-2007 I completed the first year of a nursing diphe. Since then, I have done different things e.t.c I will be applying for an access to medicine course next year, but I wanted to get some work experience sorted out. I have already done the whole ward thing, making beds, feeding patients e.t.c and I dont really feel I would get much out of it to do all of that all over again really and I want something solid that I can do continuously right up untill when I apply. I came across the BPAS ( British Pregnancy Advisory Service - please google it ) which primarily deal with abortions and they are looking for causal healthcare assistants. I am thinking about applying for it, as its something different and they also do vasectomies, offer contraception advice e.t.c Do you think the nature of this work would be a bit risky if I am looking to talk about what I have learnt from this experience on my personal statement for medical school or would you say its good experience? I am also looking to become a volunteer for leukemia care alongside it.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    heya!

Right well I dont know about what other people think, and I agree it is a bit of a iffy topic, but I think it sounds like really good work experience as its different from the typical applicant experience. It will certainly make your PS stand out, and I think on that basis it will get you to interview. My advice would be to approach with caution as to how you write about in your PS and how you talk about it at interview. Expect to be grilled if you get to interview as obviously they will be very interested to know about BPAS and your opinions surrounding abortion etc.

I think you make a strong applicant with your previous experience, the BPAS and volunteer leukemia work.

    Good luck!

    Amy
