Deferring entry?
Hi all,
it's been a while since I was on this forum but I am back and have come full circle and am still looking at medicine.
The last time was in 2007 prior to me leaving the Army but I had a bit of a wobble with MTAS/MMC and went into banking after the Army. I think that was a mistake.
I am now thinking of applying for 2011/2012 entry and wanted to know peoples' thoughts re applying and deferring.
Basically if I wait until 2012 I get a a retention bonus from my employer. Plus I have a savings plan that should mature by then; And it is an extra year of having a decent salary. So financially, 2012 is a good year for me even though I'll be 33 at the start.
What I was wondering is: Can I apply for 2011 and then defer if I get accepted or would that not happen?
I am really aiming for the 4 year graduate course. I intend to sit GAMSAT and UKCAT this summer and thought maybe I could apply for 2011 and go through the interviews etc. If I am accepted then I can defer or make a decision then and if I fail, then I have another year or can revisit my career options.
What do you guys think?
Thanks,
MarkLast edited by MEDEVAC; 26-01-2010 at 04:05 PM.

I don't think it's possible to defer on any of the 4-year courses.

From what I understand you can't defer 4 year course places, and if you were planning to defer on a 5 year, you would apply at the time of your UCAS application, not after you received an offer.
Good luckANYTHING WRITTEN BY ME ON THIS SITE DOES NOT REPRESENT THE VIEWS OF SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY!
Finally a final year medical student!

If you get offered a place on st georges GEP then you can request to defer providing you are going to "use the time productively" (told me this in the info pack i got sent when i was offered an interview). I haven't heard of any other unis doing this though.

It's probably worth mentioning if I remember correctly, that you have to put deferred entry on your UCAS entry form...i.e. before you get an interview, so defo phone the unis first to check. This will also give you plenty of time to get in loads of work experience and voluntary work! Good luck, I'm 29 and having a dramatic career change (hopefully) and I can't wait!
