    Newbie looking for advice

    Hi everyone,

I am new to this website, so please excuse my ignorance on the subject matter. I'm 27 years old and i have been wanting to do Medicine ever since i know myself. However, due to some logistical difficulties i had to postpone my dream of becoming a doctor for too long now.

I have a dual, Canadian-EU citizenship and for many personal reasons i would like to go to medical school in the UK (and permanently live there). I have finished a Bachelor of Science (average was a B+), with a specialization in Animal Biology at UBC, Vancouver, Canada. Since i'm currently living in Canada i have no idea where and how to begin with the application process... I don't even know what my status would be in the UK. I am hoping i can get away without being considered an international student.

Can anyone offer some advice or point to some threads that discuss about similar dilemmas? I would be very-very grateful!!

One more question: does the application process include reference letters, a personal statement and a CV, like it does in North America?

Thanks in advance for any help you are willing to offer!

    Marius

Well, I can help a bit as I am an American and I'm apply to study medicine in the UK. I know the immigration rules are different for Canada, but if you have EU citizenship you should be considered a home student. However, it would be best to contact the universities you want to apply to make certain of this. The ones I applied to had me fill out a form assessing my immigration status. For some universities I am considered a home student, for others I'm international.

The application to study medicine is made through UCAS which will then send you application on to the universities that you want to apply to. You will need to provide a presonal statement and a reference (preferably someone who is familar with your academic work). The UCAS application includes a section for work experence, but if you have published papers or other things I've found there is no place for them on the application. Your best bet is to contact the universities directly and see what else they would want from you (CV, transcripts, etc). This is the thread about UCAS: Personal Statements and UCAS forms - New Media Medicine

You will also need to take either the UKCAT, BMAT or GAMSAT which I am fairly certain you can sit in canada somewhere. There are also threads which discuss the various tests.

I hope that helps a bit. I'm sure some others here can add more to this or correct me if I'm wrong.

    We don't need you, sorry.

I don't know what that is, but B+ is bad.

    Canada isn't part of Europe.

This is really offensive. Isn't there a moderator somewhere who can remove this kind of spiteful rubbish?

Thanks for the info, i appreciate it. I will contact each individual university and ask them directly, as per your advice. I do have published papers (including some to be published in the near future) so i need to ask them about that too.

I have to deal with frustrated, racist, narrow-minded little sheep like that on a daily basis so after a while one learns to go over them as if they never were. In the grand scheme of things they never matter, what matters are people who really make a difference such as great doctors, astrophysicists and engineers.

This user has been banned on several occasions and they are re-registering from multiple accounts.

We have identified the IP addresses they have been posting from and are in the process of contacting the relevant authorities to identify them and have them disconnected and prosecuted if necessary. We will also be informing the relevant school and university authorities of this user's activities.

Any users thinking of posting messages like this should realise that we keep a record of the posts and can identify the users by name through their internet service providers (even if they are on dynamic IPs - we also record the time of the posting). We have previously had users banned from using university and school internet resources and people posting offensive messages here have had to explain their actions to their school and/or university authorities.

Its definately worth determining whether you would be an international as I vaguely remember reading that you have to have been resident for a period of time to class as a Home student... This may not apply everywhere though or it could just be the student loans company rules.
    Applying 2010:

    UEA: 5yr - Offer!
    Sheffield: 5yr - interviewed 2nd March
Barts 4yr - interview 25th March (at WMS)
    Warwick 4yr - interview 25th March

Grad applicant just about finishing a PhD
    UKCAT - 732.5

Hi Marioptera. I think to be considered a home student, you need to have lived in the UK for a certain period of time (possibly 2/3 years). I would check with the individual med schools though.
