Will I be able to get any financial support?
So this is my situation:
1) I'm british and so is my father, but i've been living in an EU country for the past 18 years, I spent my first 7 in england.
2) I've studied and received a non science undergraduate degree in an EU country.
3) im 25
4) My family's income is 14000 and we are 5 in total.
5) I have nothing of value in my name just 2000 in my bank account.
This is what I want to do:
Move back to england then:
1) Study for 5 GCSEs in 1 year
2) Study for 4 AS levels in 1 year
3) Study for 3 A2 levels in 1 year
4) Apply for a 6 year medical course
Now i'm hoping by the time I have my A levels I won't be considered an overseas student anymore so medical school costs 3000 a year instead of 12000 a year. Hopefully it stays at 3000 even if you already have a degree?
I've read the NHS will pay for year 5 and 6 medical course fees.
I know there are problems with people with degrees getting loans, will I be able to get any other financial support at all?Last edited by Maria900; 27-06-2009 at 09:04 AM.

dont quote me on this, but i think that because you got your degree from an eu country, you can apply to graduate entry programs and also be considered for some funding - so there would be no need to so gcse's and a levels in the uk. im sure someone more knowledgeable will come along soon and either confirm this or correct me.

Hmmm complex. As for fees is home/EU = ~ 3000 vs. International/non-EU = ~14000 so you'd be fine unless some serious changes happen or the BNP willies get in. NHS only pays for the final year of 5 year course fees as far as I know and years 2-4 of GEP ones.
I would totally call one of the unis and ask them what the deal is with EU degrees etc. Then call student loans company and ask them. It seems you need to have been living in uk for 3yrs to qualify for maintenance. Then call NHS bursary and ask them. Then post back on here because Im interested now!
Oh and start saving now for the course, its well expensive and financing is completely rubbish!

I think you should check the funding in your own country also, as you can study anywhere in the EU now. Your degree should count but you will need to contact individual unis to see if this meets the entry requirements. Of course, it may or may not be an equivalent to a 2:1 or above?
You are still a graduate, so this will be taken into account whether you go back to GCSEs or not.
Which country are you in?

Hello!
I have a 2.1 but it's in IT so I dont think that counts as a science and I never took any A levels and only took maths, computing, english and physics at O level, at low level so they were limited to C maximum.
As for my 2.1 it was an external degree, we did our exams at school in Malta then they were flown to the UK to be corrected by London Metropolitan, who is awarding the degree in the end. We paid the fees in full with no help from anyone.
I wanted to go the GCSE route because it would give me 3 years to volunteer at hospitals during summers as I have no healthcare experience at the moment. Then I wanted to use my IT thesis as proof I can work independently. This route should also teach me lab skills, and improve my maths as I feel they are poor at the moment.
So it should give me a chance to get into a good school, i'm hoping they would take into account the GCSEs and A levels even though I already have a 2.1 if I apply for a 6 year course.
So as for fees, after i've spent 3 years in the UK and have the A levels, the NHS would pay year 5 and 6 and I could get a maintenance loan for year 1-6, other than that i'm on my own?Last edited by Maria900; 28-06-2009 at 02:06 AM.

which 6 year course? Is it the one with the foundation year in medicine? You'd only need to do the 5yr or 4 yr ones surely with your qualifications by then?
