take what they say at the studentfinance offices with a pinch of salt! they have a habit of getting things mixed up. do some internet research to see if you can find out if the rules really have changed, if you cant find anything then be prepared for them to ask for the money back. (sorry, i didnt mean to pee on your cornflakes! theyve given me a tuition fee loan too so i hope that something has changed or they dont look for their mistakes!)

I just filled out my student loan application online. I was under the impression that having already done a degree that I was able to get a maintenance loan but not a tuition fee loan (so I saved up for that). HOWEVER, when it came to the end of the application process, I had to click on whether or not I ALSO wanted to apply for a tuition loan and how much (maximum amount or £££). As I only just did it, I have yet to have it cleared/approved, BUT it does look like there is that possibility.
So, apply online and see what happens (they say it takes about 6 weeks).

This thread has been repeated a few times now, I started one several months back (sorry can't seem to find it to link).
Basically I was in the same situation. I applied online a couple of months ago and during the application ticked the tuition fee option as well, thinking might as well go for it. I was subsequently approved for both the maintaince and tuition fee loans! After speaking to several people already studying med they informed me that it was worth checking as they had been stung for the entire tuition fee repayment a few months into the course starting (when the SLC realised what had happened).
I really didn't want this to happen to me so I made a point of discussing it with a senior SLC staff member on the phone. She said that after looking at the details we are DEF NOT ABLE TO GET THE TUITION FEE LOAN, but are intitled to the maintainence one (as we are doing medicine, if this wasn't the case we would have no support available!!) So be advised that they are aware of the situation and even if you slip through the net initially you will almost certainly be expected to pay it back at a later date.
That was the onformation that I got a couple of months ago (and my application has been subsequently updated)! I really hope that they may have changed the rules, but I also contacted the higher education minister this year and his reply certainly indicated that he did not see a problem with the current situation (as we get some support and apparently can easily offset the tuition fees with bank support, complete joke eh!!!). I'll try and find his letter and quote it on here when I find it..
Hope that is some help everyone,

Right, just to update from the above post. I've just got off the phone to Student Finance England and asked to clarify it all with the most senior member of staff I could. As suspected (as is written in all the literature) if you have recieved funding for a previous degree, you will ONLY be entitled to the MAINTAINANCE loan, and NOT the TUITION fee loan! Obviously if your circumstances are a bit different (i.e. not a graduate or didn't recieve funding for your first degree) then this may not be the case, but the lady at SF-E specifically said the above!!!!!! She said if you have ticked the tuition loan box you may be initially approved but will DEF have to pay it back (within the first year!)..
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it is as I suspected to be honest, like I said we are lucky to even get the maintainance loan by the sounds of it!! I for one don't want to have to pay it all back within the first couple of months, seems like a bit of a waste of time!! I can't see them making a mistake (she assured me they would catch up with you) and letting you slip through the net, especially if there are loads of other graduates struggling in the same position alongside you in the year!

Dude, thanks for checking and saving my ass! I was only going to use tuition loan and store the original cash in case I was struggling and couldn't work. Looks like I'm back to the original plan of working as much as possible!

finance
Just got my letter back from Student Finance and despite it saying that I was entitled to Tuition Fees and Maintenance when I applied online. When the paperwork has come through I have only got the Maintenance loan, which follows what alot of people on here have already said. I'm a bit dissappointed that I wasn't one of the errors in the system that would some how magically get both and then they'd realise when it was too late! I'm thinking about applying for the Natwest Loan which I will inevitably need. Or the CDL. Are there any other charities or funding options that anyone else is exploring on here?

remember the CDL is a short-term loan and if you take it too early you'll be starting to pay it back before you've finished your course...

I make loan interest payments to financial institutions in the U.S. for student loans that I took for graduate studies in the U.S. I currently work in India. Am I eligible for tax deductions in India for these payments? Please let me know.
