The trouble is, they know that most people can probably take out a bank loan for the tuition fees. I can't see them being sympathetic

I think when they talk about other sources they mean government sources or LEA not banks otherwise there wouldnt be any point at all in offering CDLs.

I e-mailed them to ask whether the CDL would be available for my first year on the GEP and didn't really get a clear answer...
The CDL is available through three high street banks: Barclays, The Co-operative and The Royal Bank of Scotland. There is eligibility criteria that you and the course need to meet in order to be eligible to apply. It is then the individual decision of the bank if you can actually have a loan with them or not.
About you
You can apply for a CDL if:
*
you're aged 18 or over
* you're ordinarily resident in England, Scotland or Wales with an unlimited right to remain in the UK
* you intend to work in one of the 27 European Union (EU) countries, Iceland, Norway or Liechtenstein after you've finished your learning
* you can't pay for the course yourself
About your course
You can use a CDL for:
*
course fees - 80% of the fees, or 100% if you've been out of work for three months or more when you apply
* other course costs such as childcare, travel, equipment and living expenses (food, bills, housing costs etc)
* learning run by course/training providers that are on the CDL Register of Learning Providers
*
If you would like to find out if your course is registered with the CDL scheme then you should ask the course provider about this. If your course provider would like to check they are registered then they can contact the CDL Registration line for Learning Providers on 0845 000 0045.
* two years is the maximum length of course or two years of a longer course (usually the last two years).
You can't use a CDL for anything you have other funding to cover. This includes Local Education Authority awards, mandatory grants, student loans, NHS bursaries, money from employers or if you've got enough money yourself to fund it. However, you can apply for a CDL to top up your funding if it doesn't cover the entire cost of the course.
So, I know I'll get a maintenance loan and this would pay for fees and have savings - so???

Thanks,
has anyone been approved for a student loan as a second degree for starting in September? because I was told I was not eligible and also tried to fill an application out online and my application couldn't be processed because it also said I wasn't eligible, I've rung around many people including universities, NHS bursarys, etc. and no one seems to have an answer except Student loans direct who just say no!!

You are entitled to a student loan for maintenance as it is for medicine and it is one of the exceptions - but then I'm still trying to clear up a problem from my last degree before I can apply online.
Perhaps it is something else on the form which has triggered an ineligble response?
I think there's been a lack of training at SFE now that they have taken over from the LEAs.
Actually, I think I'll confuse them further as I have an honours degree with only 1 year's previous support (I self funded through the OU)... let's see what that does!

The Barclay's CDL is problematic as you have to start paying it back after 2 years - so you could only take it out for your last two years of the degree, else you start paying back while you're still studying!
Natwest and HSBC have "Professional Studies Loans" up to around £20,000...

maintainance loans
Has anyone here been a mature student with a degree previously funded with student loans and now gets maintainance loan?
I rang student finances and also spoke to a UCAS officer who both said there is no maintainance or fee loan for second degree unless its intial teacher training or your first degree was a foundation only degree or HND.
Is this right.... as I was previously under the impression we were eligable for maintainance loans only, and so have only made provision for my fee loan.
thanks

Tell them it's in their booklet...
"Previous study
Tuition Fee Loans: As a general rule, Tuition Fee
Loans will be available for the full length of your
course, plus one extra year if needed. However,
this period may be affected if you have previously
studied a course of Higher Education.
Maintenance Loans: Even if you have previously
studied in the UK, Maintenance Loans are
available to those who do not have an equivalent
or higher level qualification; and to students who
are on a course leading to a professional
qualification such as a medical doctor, dentist,
veterinary doctor and architect.
Some supplementary grants may also be available
to those who have previously studied in the UK."

They have changed the rules, in that they now look at equivalent or higher qualifications not just honours degrees but not if you study medicine etc.
