Advice for mature student please

I am nearly 30, I am married with 3 children and want to be a doctor.

I have 9 GCSE's and an Open University Health & Social Care (access type course) course.

I would be applying to Liverpool eventually but what do I need to do in the meantime with me being a mature student? I don't have A levels, I completed the access health course last summer and was accepted for nursing but I really want to be a doctor.

Hi!

Have a look at this pdf (link below) it's from the BMA and it details what the entry qualifications are for the colleges which offer training to become a Doctor. A-levels are preffered but I am sure they accept other quals. It's near the bottom of the PDF.

http://www.bma.org.uk/ap.nsf/AttachmentsByTitle/PDFbecomingadoctor2009/$FILE/becomingadoctor2009.pdf

I am in the same boat (although have no children), Ill be 26 when I start too

Consider Lancaster's A900 [i think] course. It's a feeder into Liverpool and Lancaster Medical School.
Also, consider taking further courses at the OU, in chemistry and human biology. Many universities specify which courses they want.
Depending which part of the country you're in or are prepared to move to in order to take courses, there are many access courses available which give you the scientific grounding that you need for access to medicine.
You don't mention your experience. You need the experience in healthcare so make that a priority if you don't have any already.

I would get in touch with the schools directly about your situation. They will be able to offer you the best advice. Good luck to you!

Thank you all very much.

I live in Chester, Cheshire so Liverpool is my prefered choice of school. I was told they do a 6 year foundation to health studies course. I am going to try getting further info tomorrow.

Jemmy28 - try introducing yourself to the admissions team so they learn your name and understand your circumstances/background etc. If you're set on Liverpool you'll presumably want to make decisions based on their entry requirements, so it pays you to try to get a more personalised response than some of the generic comunications that are sometimes churned out to prospective students.

Best of luck! x
