To give you hope I got into Barts at 40 and there's another person a couple of years older than me in my year. There was a 51 year old somewhere here too I hear. No reason to let your age stand in the way. As long as your other factors are competitive then age is irrelevant, at least to some med schools. Let's face it, you can be a GP til you're 70 now. If you qualify at 45 that still leaves you 25 years of practicing medicine!!! Best of luck!

Thanks for that - very interesting. I have heard of people of 50 getting into med school.

Did you get into Barts as a graduate? Did you have to take any A levels and if so what grades did they ask? Any info would be very useful.

Thanks

M

Not a graduate (had a professional qualification degree equivalent but no formal degree) so had to do 3 A levels and 1 AS. They wanted AABb at that time but I believe it's now AAA, and you need Bio or Chem as one of them and the other subject to AS level. I got the AABb I needed and was otherwise competitive, so here I am! The only difference if you're older is that you'll be expected at interview to have an answer as to why you've left medicine so late as a career, otherwise the process is identical, as are the entry grades for A levels.
Personally I really like Barts (I would say that though wouldn't I?) because it has all nationalities, all cultures/ethnicities, and all ages of students. It's very inclusive and I've suffered very little ageist banter...so if you're a bit older and thinking of applying then I'd definitely put Barts on your list.

Gizmo, we must know each other for you to have guessed so accurately! ;-)
Seriously though, you need some new ageist banter. You gave me the same zimmyframe line when I applied over a year ago..tsk tsk..
I suspect my first need of a wheelchair will be when I fall off one of the tables in the Union that I "might" dance on occasionally! Very anti Health and Safety!!
Of course if you're older than I then I'll concede to your greater wisdom and wit, and let you off the hook for those comments!
