OK, why do you hate the HCA job??? Just asking because I'm an HCA and I think its the best job I've ever had, its taught me so much about life and death and I've learned so many skills (particularly people skills).

I think I remember slightly hating my job when I started, I knew nothing, got in the way a lot, it was generally a bit daunting.

You need to give it a chance, it takes a good few months to settle in, but I bet if you stick at it you'll be grateful.

If its NHS yes, you'd have to do a month, but really if you did leave without doing your notice, what would you lose???? holiday pay?you've not worked there long enough. its not like they'll sue you. You will however make it a bit difficult for the rest of the staff.

A girl started about the same time as me and quit after her first shift!

Don't know how it worked out notice wise etc but I never saw her again. I think it was the moment she had to help us clean somebody with horrendous C. Dif. that pushed her over the edge.

I'd think about why you're so certain you want to quit. Do you want to medicine in the long term? If so, there's nothing quite like HCA work to introduce you to it. I also found it taught me a little humility which can only be a good thing in a doctor.
Even I got into med school in the end. Don't give up hope...

She's not talking about leaving HCA work altogether, just where she is at the moment. She's working on a day surgery ward. If you've ever worked on one of those you'd understand.

Laura I'm not sure about notice it probably depends on individual employers though I would have thought the fact that you haven't signed anything yet means you're not bound legally so you could up and leave any time.

From the ward managers point of view I suppose they probably need that time to find someone to replace you.

My poor mum had a lot of trouble today with three nurses taking off sick, a load off on maternity leave, eight staff having just left and the three new staff only starting adaptation today. Top that with five hearts today and six admissions for ops tomorrow plus the usual pile for cath lab...it's a hard auld job!

wow tough day, I am still supernumeracy though.

Just feel i have taken a step backwards, but you know when something just doesn't feel right for you. I do, I am 32 for crying out loud.

So I spoke to someone in charge and was told after 5 shifts( full days) I really hadn't given it much of a chance.

I should give it a few months at least!!!!!

What do you do exactly on that ward? We don't have supernumeracy HCA's here, we're just thrown into it
