Med (GEM oo otherwise) courses abroad

    Guys

Am fully aware that this will most likely have been covered elsewhere, or at another time on this forum- so, if you know, could someone point me in the right direction? I imagine most- if not all, courses would be cost-prohibitive (I'm not exactly flush with the old pennies- one degree down and the civil service don't pay that well!) but I thought I should try and investigate properly!

I'm not being top be lazy or to ask you to do my searching for me- just wonder if anyone even knows what the options are so that I can look a bit further

    Thanks muchly

    Cat

Well, being part of the EU means that you can apply anywhere in any EU country and study there paying the same as the students from the respective country...in most cases it would actually be cheaper than in England (fees are mostly cheaper or non-existent, and living costs are cheaper almost everywhere). Problem is that they would expect you to speak the relevant language :-) Some unis teach in English though.
In Australia overseas students pay around 30000 Au$ a year fees, but living costs are a lot cheaper than England. In the US fees vary a lot but are generally prohibitive (for me anyway)!

AU$30 000? I don't know the exchange rate but that sounds like an awful lot of pounds... I wish I'd pursued a European language- I don't think GCSE French is going to cut it somehow!

I know- its mental isn't it?!! I don't imagine for an instant that I would be at all able to afford any of those options- even staying in the UK seems like a second degree might be cost-prohibitive, I just thought I'd check some of it out and see! A bit nuts really, but how awesome would Oz be for Medical School- I have this wonderful idea that I'd fall in love there and it'll just be amazing! an expensive way to do it tho!

There was a lot of stuff around about studying in Prague at one point (Charles University rings a bell) so you could try looking for that. No idea about fees etc. Also, not sure about what's involved in getting your qualification recognised in the UK - I think you need to do the PLAB exam but I'm sure someone else will be able to give you more info on that.

I've seen that ad about the place in Prague too. It's a private uni so the fees will be enormous, though apparently they're v. easy to get into if you have the money. But I'm not even sure if it's GMC recognised? I think I read something somewhere that you have to take the exam that international doctors have to take when you come back to the UK.

Overall, I think unless you're fluent in a European language or have Australian citizenship then any course outside of UK will be financially prohibitive- unless you're LOADED. Which of course, some people are apparently!

EDIT: sorry I realised I just totally repeated what Montreux has said above!

Romania apparently have a course which is only about £3,000 though I was told this, I haven't actually researched it myself. You don't have to know their language when you start but you'll be expected to learn it.

Romanian is a great language :-)
If you've ever done Latin or any Romance language, you'll be able to read it without problems...It sounds very cute too...Almost as nice as Portuguese :-)

£3000 overall or £3000 per year? 'Cos that's about the same as UK for graduates.
