    Question advice needed!!!

    Hi everyone,

I have a big decision to make and would appreciate your advice!!
I'm 22, in my final year of my geology degree and have been considering two options in the last year: medicine and midwifery. Both health related but both completely different professions. If I went for the medicine option it would mean I would have a wide variety of options available to me and I would be able to help and work with many different people in the future and coming from a science background it would fulfill me academically.

BUT.....I have this feeling inside of me that I would love to be a midwife that won't go away. I am worried though that if I follow the midwifery path I could end up feeling limited, or not be able to get a job at the end of the training and regret that I didn't do medicine.

I have done work experience with both so have had a glimpse what both professions entail and am still confused which to go for.

It feels like its a bit of a heart and head matter at the moment, heart saying midwifery and head saying medicine.

Anyway sorry for rambling on I would really appreciate your views on this....know that its my decision to make in the end but would welcome any advice.

    Thanks

ps. sorry for the double posting but would appreciate the views of other grad/mature students out there

If you've done work experience in both areas, that's a good start. If you're still really not sure, you could always do some more, or arrange to talk to junior doctors, current midwifes, etc. It kind of sounds like you're veering towards midwifery, and I would point out that medicine is something you need to be 100% sure about and committed to. The competition is high, and it will show if you're heart's not in it.

Definitely don't rush into your decision though- if you need to take an extra year to debate the matter, get more work experience, etc, then do it- this is the rest of your life!!

Good luck with whichever you decide!!

    hello,
Heres a possible option - how about doing medicine and studying in Obs and Gyn or Paediatrics? obviously not exactly midwifery, but would it satisfy the same things that appeal to you about that career? Just an idea.

Good luck either way - am sure both will be fulfilling careers!
