Medical student or mature student or Student doctor?

So I'm asking how you see yourself/explain what you do instead of a job.

"Medical student" conjures up images of undergrad wild excesses

"Mature medical student" seems to be stating the bleeding obvious clarification of "medical student"

"Student doctor" is a term used in one of the GEP prospectuses

"Graduate medical student" has gravitas

Or there are combinations..."graduate student doctor"

Any thoughts?

Nick

It was until I reached the bottom of your post I realised why you posted it - Philosophy and History Graduate!!!!

For me Chemistry Graduate I could not care less what they call me or call myself, a medical student is the word i will be using from October - but the truth being told is i would only care what i am called when i qualify, then i will definitely demand i am called Dr.

Interesting one. I think I'd like to call myself a student doctor, but I'm not sure that'd be appropriate until I start actually going into hospitals.

What's been bothering me about going back to uni is that my current title is "Dr", and, because of my current work environment, it's what I use. It seems little weird to keep using it when I'm a medical student, but I've not been "Miss" or "Ms" for years now, and it's on all my documents. Perhaps I should just invent myself a new title instead?

Or perhaps I think too much as well.

I think if I was a Dr but not a medical one yet I'd revert back to Miss or Ms during med school, only because I would worry that it might heighten people's expectations of me before I really knew what I was doing!

To answer the original question I'd be happy with the title 'Medical Student', I'm not adding the word 'mature' I feel old enough already!

That's my worry, I have to admit. Although it's not as if I insist on being addressed as Dr! I think I might just not use a title at all - simpler that way.

And apologies to Nick for derailing the thread some what.

student doctor works best in most cases. it implies you are just about there.

These dayz 'medical student' labels you (for many patients) as an instant poshie and the others are far too long, macca.
Although 'medical student' is fine in-house, amongst other students, despite the usual medics v. normal students at most unis.

Skittles - I don't care what I'm called, especially after qualifying and then I'll be quite happy not to be called doctor. But it's interesting that different expressions for the same thing have different nuances/convey slightly different information.
