Skittles - a great paradoxical view: you think it strange that I'm asking about it and at the same time admit that you will insist in a few years time on being called something in particular?!

there's an interesting (well, ok, if you like ethics) debate about this ethically as well as in terms of personal preference!

the theory goes that 'student doctor' to a patient makes them focus on the 'doctor' bit and they get convinced you have more experience (and more good reason to be sat in on their consultation) than you really do. Hence it opens doors to consultations in a way that 'medical student' doesn't.

the debate centres on the idea that this is a kind of con-trick on patients and that we should use 'medical student' which doesn't imply that we are already doctors (is a 'student doctor' someone who is studying to be a doctor, or a doctor studying something?)...

anecdotally, having been introduced by GPs to patients as both, 'student doctor' kept me in more consultations than 'medical student'. That may or may not be a good thing, depending on what your conscience lays weight on...

personally I'm happy to pretend I've returned to the youthful days of being an irresponsible student for as long as possible

That is interesting, student doctor does have a degree more ambiguity about it as a description, and the ethical issue hadn't really occurred to me.

I suppose you could say that as long as the doctor treating the patient who's consultation you want to sit in on isn't under any illusions about the amount of experience you have, it doesn't matter.

How about 'I'm training to be a doctor'. You're not giving yourself a title, just telling people what you are doing. That's my preference as an induhvidual.

okay may be i kinda shot myself in the ass what i actually meant is not insisting to be called doctor after 5 years but more like to be recognised as a doctor (now i know iam probably making it worse but i cant really explain it in better terms).. as opposed to worrying about my status as of now..

and i dont think you are strange its just i have never actually thought of it, and then i realised you are a philosopher...

I like student doctor, as I find many patients don't really know what a medical student is. Besides, student nurses are called 'student nurses', so it makes sense to say student doctor. Mind you, I usually end up introducing myself as a medical student because it pops into my mind first!

I do get annoyed having to explain that I'm not training to be a nurse when I tell patients I'm a medical student. One of our consultants insists we call ourselves student doctors because we're at the clinical stage now. However, I'm still in the habit of saying medical student.

Hi Skittles

Ah, I see exactly what you mean, no need to explain it in better terms. In that case I stand corrected! Apologies.

I think the best of all would be to be recognised as a doctor without ever resorting to saying "I'm a doctor"! That would be a true sign of acceptance and arrival.

Some more philosophising: I am definitely strange (aren't we all, if we are honest with ourselves?), and I'm definitely not a philosopher, I've just done a bit of philosophy.

Right, I'm typing crap now, I really oughta go cook supper!

Laters, Nick
