there's an interesting (well, ok, if you like ethics) debate about this ethically as well as in terms of personal preference!
the theory goes that 'student doctor' to a patient makes them focus on the 'doctor' bit and they get convinced you have more experience (and more good reason to be sat in on their consultation) than you really do. Hence it opens doors to consultations in a way that 'medical student' doesn't.
the debate centres on the idea that this is a kind of con-trick on patients and that we should use 'medical student' which doesn't imply that we are already doctors (is a 'student doctor' someone who is studying to be a doctor, or a doctor studying something?)...
anecdotally, having been introduced by GPs to patients as both, 'student doctor' kept me in more consultations than 'medical student'. That may or may not be a good thing, depending on what your conscience lays weight on...
personally I'm happy to pretend I've returned to the youthful days of being an irresponsible student for as long as possible
