doctor not nurse?

hi guys

I have an interview coming up and have been trying to answer the question "why do you want to be a doctor and not a nurse?" adequately in my head. Only I'm not sure I have the answer. I want to be more in charge of patient care and have the knowledge to make the diagnosis. Of course there are many nurse specialists who are highly qualified and knowledgable in their fields and now nurse nurses have the power to prescribe, which though limited will increase in the future. So help me please guys, what would you say?

There are roughly one hundred billion threads on this very theme on these forums. Do some searching.

There are lots of threads on this but I’ll give you my reasons - I'm very much a problem solver. I take great satisfaction from being given a problem and using my knowledge and skills to come up with a potential solution. Obviously in medicine, this relates to diagnosing and starting treatment based on what you believe the problems to be. The real fulfilment then comes from the patient getting better, because not only have I helped to improve a person’s quality of life which I would take great pleasure in, but I've also got the satisfaction in knowing that I got the diagnosis correct and have solved the problem. Overall, very fulfilling and rewarding!

As a nurse I wouldn't get this same level of satisfaction and fulfilment as I wouldn't be actively involved in the diagnosis and it wouldn't have been my skill, judgement and application of knowledge that helped the patient. So for me, nursing wouldn't give me the rewards that I'm after.

While we're here can someone also tell me why I want to be a doctor and what I got out of my work experience?

Seriously, you have to answer this type of question for yourself - if you really can't think of a truthful and convincing answer, you've got more to worry about than fooling the interviewers into giving you a place!

rachelm - i know exactly why i want to be a doctor, and i know exactly to how to voice those feelings. I want it so much that I'm terrified of mucking up my inteview and just thought I'd see how some other people would answer the question. I have no intentions to fool anyone.
