Unhappy student accounts - baffled

Perhaps someone can shed some light on this! I'm about to enter my second year and am a married mature student (35). I have applied to Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC and Natwest for student accounts - I have been rejected from all three (this is over the past year). None of them will give me reasons why - except they state that I have no credit history. But do 18 year olds applying for student accounts have much of a credit history? I got my credit report and there are no problems and there is a good history. Has anyone else had problems getting a student account or can you recommend a bank that might be more open... I'm annoyed and frustrated, especially as I can't seem to get any other reason. Natwest tried overriding the computer, but ultimately 'the computer says no'. I've managed to supplement with part-time work but can't go on like this throughout the degree! GRRRRR

Hi there

I bank with HSBC and because I have been out of further education for 7 years they apparently cannot allow me to have a "student bank account". Not sure if this helps......but that was the reason HSBC gave to me . Too old to be a student, sounds a bit like my Mum..........

Sounds bizzare and maybe they have changed their policy but I had been out of full time education for 19 years and still got a student account, Young Persons railcard and all!!

I think it's odd how 18 year olds with no credit history can get student bank accounts very very easily, yet it's impossible for you.

Credit reports are based on a lot of things, i.e. the more credit cards you have, the better it is, as long as you are keeping up repayment, loans etc all help. If you are over a certain age and have never had these, or have been in arrears, then this will lower you rating. Obviously, your credit report was all above board, however this does not mean that you credit score is high enough to be eligible for a student account...Is all very complex.

I hope someone out there gives you one, hun.

Thanks all! It's just annoying. I did get a copy of my credit score too, and it was excellent. Hence, my complete bewilderment! Especially as I went to banks where other matures successfully got an account. I was thinking of trying the Halifax, they do student accounts. Does anyone have one? I'm wondering if it's because I'm married...?

I don't see being married would have an effect to be honest, unless of course you wanted a joint account.

I think it seems very strange.

Have you lived in the UK all your life?

Are you a graduate mature, or do they perhaps think you are? Some places are really narky about giving you a student account for a second undergraduate degree. I've had some fun arguing with RBS about that, but I won

I was abroad for a while, but maintained UK accounts, addresses and all that business. I am a home student, on the electoral register and all that. It is a second undergrad degree, perhaps they don't like that.
