Yeap, it's interest free, however, if you extend it beyond £3,000 you pay something like 8.9% interest.

Up to £2,000 interest-free overdraft available on request depending on year of study:
Year 1: up to £1,000
Year 2: up to £1,250
Year 3: up to £1,500
Year 4: up to £1,750
Year 5 and above: up to £2,000.

Yes, your student loan will have to be paid into your account.

I had the same problem with the HSBC. I was not given a credit scoring by HSBC itself and rejected althogh their independent Credit Company had oked my application. I went to Halifax they offered me the account same day but latter on I discovered that they will offer me reduced ammount of overdraft (instead of what they had advertised and told me at the time of application). I closed my acount with them and went with NET WEST, no probs so far. I was most upset the way HSBC turned me down. It's their loss if they preffer a 17 year over me. So far I never have been in any debts or failed to pay any bill or declaired myself bankruptt. I get the feeling most banks donot want mature students who can manage money matters well and avoid getting into debts, as it doesn't really benefit them! Does it?
