HELP ! Will there be a job for us all ?
There's a lot of stories in the papers at the moment about SHOs not being able to get jobs. Some posts, they say, had 1,000 applicants. Other stories claim that 2,000 junior doctors are out of work and heading for the dole. Is it true ? Can the DofH really have botched it that badly ? Apparently this is the first year coming through now where they increased med student numbers but apparently they simulaneously REDUCED training posts. The one thing I THOUGHT was certain about medicine was a good job at the end of it all. Is anyone else REALLY WORRIED ? Will they have it sorted soon ? What a nightmare for the guys this year who cant get jobs, I'm really feeling for them. All that work ... and then no job.
Bristol - 6 year - please be gentle.

ive heard that a lot too, but i have not heard of anyone who it has happened to though, i think that they might see the problem and limit the numbers that they train in for next year, whih isnt too good for the people waiting to get in

Oh good god- do not tell me this! I'm leaving science because of the lack of career prospects. Please, oh please, do not let this be true .

is it easy to go abroad? i can only speak english and punjabi so i dont know which european country other than UK would want my services. i heard it a mission to get into america.
one of the reasons why i went into medicine was becuase it offered a secure future and 100% job security. i feel i have cursed the profession. why god why!!!

05-08-2005, 11:05 AM #7Hi vic, If I ever finish writing my PhD then I'll be starting at birmingham in september on the grad course. So many emotions to cope with at the moment, I want to explode! What about you - in med school already or starting / applying?

The Government have got 7 years to sort out the mess, before it affects any of us who are just setting out on the path of medicine. That should be just about long enough!
I hear New Zealand is very nice - and there's always Australia and Canada..........

Part of the reason (discussed in other threads) for the problems juniors are facing this year is the transition from the traditional PRHO/SHO career structure to the new foundation programme (problems transitioning from one to the other if you started training in the old programme).
So stop stressing - by the time most of the applicants/early year med students here qualify, the foundation programme should be more fully established.
Edit: This must be the fourth or fifth thread I've seen about this, could the mods sticky something about it for a little while?Last edited by Dan1979; 05-08-2005 at 11:55 AM.

Me too, I've just left a career in teaching science to do medicine, so please tell me there will be a job at the end of as it is costing me (like many others) a bloody fortune!
