nursing degree
hey,
I applied for medicine on leaving school in glasgow... i got 5 highers
english B, maths B, chemistry B, human biology B and religious moral and philosophical studies A... so ABBBB and left school half way through 6th yr on my final expected rejection from medicine.
aaaanyways - I started an immunology degree and it wasn't for me, as I wanted something a bit more people orientated. Hence the move to nursing. I'm in third year just now at Glasgow and i'm staying on for my honors next year and applying to med school this year so I can start on finishing my honors in nursing.
Hopefully i'll get a 2:1 or above.
I've worked as an auxiliary since i was 16 (i'm 22 in June) and have been working as a medical support worker (doing junior dr's donkey work - cannula's, ecg's, taking blood etc.) since jan 05... shadowed a pathologist and other consultants for a week when I was in 5th year... worked in nursing homes, hospitals doing agency work as an auxiliary too.
I am really pinning everything on my personal statement to get me an interview and i'll worry about the interview later....
Any ideas on what I can do to improve my chances?
also, anyone know some nursing friendly med schools.. I keep thinking it might have been better if i'd stayed with immunology, but its too late now!!
any thoughts??
cheers,
Mark

hello,
i thought that med schools would be ok with nurses but found that some aren't that keen..... i should advise you to apply to UEA because they have so many ex-nurses on the course and matures and stuff its unreal. i almost went there but got offered sheffield, who obviously would also appear to be nurse friendly when it comes down to me, but i have heard of other nurses being rejected without interview so i guess the moral of the story is that if you present nursing as an asset and can give reasons for the change that aren't "i don't like wiping arses" "i want control/power/money/status" then you should be singing like me! best of luck

I don't speak from personal experience, but I seem to remember that the graduate course at Leicester takes other helath professionals specifically. Can anyone else confirm this, or am I talking rubbish?

i second that...I'm a nurse and will be starting this sept in leicester. They're a friendly lot and I know there are lots of nurses on the prior GEP courses...not so sure about this year though so go for it.
