Deferring once you have been offered a place??
Hello,
I just wondered if anyone knew what the situation was re: deferring once you have been offered a place?
I didn't put anything on my UCAS about taking a gap year, and hadn't thought about it all until today - but I just wondered whether I have missed the boat or whether Manchester would be ok with me taking one?
On the website it just says they are happy for people to take gap years - no specific mention of when they should have been made aware of it? Definitely don't want to lose my place (I am soooo pleased I have one!), so if it's a no-go then I will be happy to start in 2010 - but just thought I would ask around before I bug admissions.
Thanks

It is at the discretion of the medical school - there is no harm in asking. They actually asked for volunteers to defer last year because too many people made their offers and got in.

Hi True.Enigma and thanks very much, that's interesting that they actually asked for volunteers. Was that in August after the A-level results came out?
I'm not sure yet whether I want to or not...got a lot of stuff to consider, might be a decision based on finances a bit nearer the time, wasn't sure whether I would upset admissions if I contacted them - didn't want to look ungrateful for my place! Do you know of anyone that has deferred ok after getting an offer?
Thanks

I would have to ask my friends at Manchester, but I assume it was after the A level results came out.
As far as chance of success is concerned I have no idea. I don't see why they would be annoyed about you asking nicely if it was possible to defer.
At worst they might just say no or they might say maybe (depending on A level results), but I imagine the earlier you ask the easier it will be for them to accommodate you.

I have considered deferring for the same reason as it is looking like they have changed the rules this year and we will not be entitled to the non means tested part of the maintenance loan like we would have been last year. I think I might just go with a career development loan instead, but I have not decided yet.
Thank goodness we have not been affected by the other change this year that would have forced us to pay international fees.

I know! - I only recently saw that about the international rates for equivalent qualifications - was so relieved when I saw it didn't apply to medicine! Well if anyone else rings them before I do then please could they post on here - or if anyone knows someone who has done it recently etc etc...I am also going to look into a career development loan - do we just start paying it back when we have completed the course?
