Foundation Years?
Hiya,
I'm doing some last~minute deliberation about where to go in September ~ I *really* love Manchester and I'm pretty sure I shall firm it, but I was just wondering if anyone could answer (what is probably a very daft!) question for me? I have always thought that after graduation you can apply to any foundation school, regardless of where you study ~ for example, I know someone who was at Leeds but who will be doing FY1 in London ~ but from reading the Manchester medical school website, I kind of got the impression that they would expect you to stay in the Manchester/North West area for FY1 and FY2...does anyone know if you would actually *have* to stay in Manchester for your foundation years if you studied there (not that that would be a problem...I've just realised this sounds awful!! I love Manchester, it's just that I am a mature student and am already looking at leaving my family and friends behind for 6 years...I may well change my mind about moving home again after graduation, but as I feel right now that's what I would want to do!!) Anyway, after all this rambling(!), what I really want to know is: if I do the MBChB at Manchester, will I have to apply to the North West Deanery for my foundation years, or will I be able to move back home (t'other side of the Pennines!) to train?
Anyway, thank you anyone who can help

Of course you don't have to stay.
The rules are the same for everywhere Manchester has no influence over where you apply, you can do what you like. Manchester just recognise that most people stay where they trained for a while after graduation.Manchester Medical School 4th year

do you know how specialty training works, i.e. is the hospital where you do your foundation programme the same as the hospital where you do your specialty training or do you have to apply again. Also, if you apply for a london hospital, does it matter what uni you go to.
Sorry for the long text. Thank you.

You have to reapply for ST jobs and unless you get a run through you may have to reapply again part way through specialty training. You don't do all your training in 1 hospital! At ST level you switch jobs (and hosp) every 6 months. At foundation, because you are doing very different jobs, when you switch (every 4 months) you are in the same hospital.

Thank you. Does the hospital know which uni you have been to when you apply for specialty training. I know this ages away - just curious.

I think they do, and if anything it would matter more then, well potentially anyway. You are interviewed for ST jobs, but not for foundation. If 1 of your interviewers went to the same school as you which is quite likely if you remain in the same area then they may favour you a bit though generally not enough for it to make much of a difference. Or, if the interviewers have come across particularly good or bad trainees from your school it will affect how they feel about you and that affects applications frequently.

When applying for ST jobs they would look at whether you did your foundation jobs in a big teaching hospital or a little DGH and would probably prefer those from bigger teaching hospitals but how much it would matter would depend on the specialty.
It would only make a difference in the ways I described before. If you are so set on London though, why not go to school there as well?Manchester Medical School 4th year
