    Intercalated degrees

    Hi,

Im trying to decide between Leeds and Manchester, and have been reading different things about the intercalated degrees at both universities. Some books Ive read say that at Manchester only a certain number of students are offered the chance to do the degree, while others say that everyone can. I was wondering how it actually works. Do you have to apply, and only a certain number are chosen?

    Thankss!

Anyone can apply so long as they have passed their exams during the academic year of application and the preceding year. So long as your CV and personal statement is good they'll accept you, their quotas aren't too rigid and the competition for many things isn't what it is for medical school. You're also permitted to apply to intercalate externally (as I have done). There is a certain degree of malleability as well: one of my friends has just set himself up on the first iBSc at Manchester in Genetics.

Ooh okay thank you. So do all applications go through the medical school and it depends on the demand for different courses?

Also, (this is completely unrelated and probably really obvious, but I just realised I don't actually know) at Manchester does everyone come out with the same degree? Or are there different classes? Does it depend on the university?

All applications go through the same admin procedure but are reviewed by different intercalation admissions teams depending on the course.

Everyone comes out with the same degree as MB ChB, if you achieve a certain amount of honours points, you are awarded MB ChB with Honours. You are also ranked into quartiles which goes towards your application to postgrad deanaries.

It's easier to intercalate internally in either case as there are usually quotas set on external students.

hey... just wondering could you apply one year to do an intercalation externally and then if you were rejected, re-apply the following year to do it internally ? ?
