If you want to go near the medical school, then Whitworth Park is a probable option, although living with two ex-WPians, they much prefer this house to Whitworth Park, even though its cold and we have mice.

Hulme Hall is very nice, slightly dearer and not so nearer as Whitworth Park (sorry I wanted to make that rhyme). I'm a big fan of Wright-Robinson, there's a free bus every 15 minutes that goes from there to the Stopford (even though its a ten minute walk). Its also ten minutes away from Piccadilly.

Most students live in Fallowfield though, which is half an hour walk, 15 minute bus, ten minute bike ride away.

I lived in Allen Hall, it was great.

yeah i was looking at whitworth and wright-robinson..
i'd have to have a proper look around to decide though..

i visited a friend once in some horrible student halls in manchester and i have a slight suspicion it might have been whitworth but i can't remember exactly.. but it was a large group of guys in the flat and cleanliness wasn't really their priority so it might not actually be that bad..

don't think i could afford anywhere at fallowfield really except maybe oak house..
if you're going out in manchester is it easy to get back to fallowfield? i mean it's not that far out of the centre is it?

good to know about the free buses though

Buses to Fallowfield are practically all the time. One of the main arterial roads into Manchester comes from Didsbury and because of the mass student population, buses are very regular at the moment costing between 60p-£1.20 to get into the city centre, with an annual bus pass costing under £150 I believe (I walk in though).

You've hit the nail on the head with students in flats as Freshers: they're the most filthy places ever. Halls are much cleaner.

Is there anywhere we should particularly try to avoid?

I live in Woolton Hall at the moment in Fallowfield and its great. Although we are one of the better halls (not that I am biased!) It has a great community feel as its small, the meals are alright and we have huge rooms compared to others! Depends if u want catered or self catered. I haven't really visited the other halls so can't really comment. With regards to being close to the med school- personally it doesn't bother me and most people live here anyway. There is a lot goin on bars/shops including a huge sainsburys! A lot of people who live near the uni ending up living in Fallowfield anyway in the second yr.

As NV05 said getting back from a night out is not a problem as the buses run til the early hours (4am i think!) and the buses are cheap- u can buy weekly passes for £5.

Is there any self-catered accomodation that you'd recommend?

i know some people in oak house and they seem to enjoy it. Its typical student accomodation and it is big, lots of people to meet- but it can be noisy and it depends what ur lookin for! Richmond park is really nice and the rooms are all en-suite but it is expensive and its sort of lifeless. Sheavyn House in Fallowfield is good too but its always in high demand. Not sure about some of the others- there are a lot of people at Whitworth Park but its not the nicest (though residents probably think otherwise) and Grosvenor is ok too but its on Oxford Rd and a bit out of the way. The advantage with Fallowfield if in self-catered accomodation, is there is a big sainsburys 5 mins walk. If you live closer to the uni u need to have a car to go to the big supermarkets.
