    textbooks

my cousin graduated a few years ago and he's got this whole lot of medical textbooks that he wants to pass on to me when i start in september. i was just wondering if any of the current students could tell me the titles of the textbooks that they use at manc. i know we're usually advised to wait until september to get our stuff, but i just wanted to know if any of them were useful so that i don't end up dragging 40 textbooks from london up to manc.

anything else i should consider getting? labcoats, pajamas for the pub crawl...

    You will definately need:

An anatomy & physiology textbook (Martini is recommended, but they are all pretty similar)
pharmacology textbook (Rang is best, but any is better than none - though an up to date one would probably be best)

Those are the minimum imo, but you can take more (I also have separate anatomy and physiology textbooks - moore&dalley and berne&levy, but those were more personal preference).

    You may need:

An immunology (wood is recommended), histology textbook (Wheaters is recommended, but again it doesn't matter too much), clinical medicine (kumar recommended, but this doesn't matter), neuroscience/neurology/neuroanatomy (crossman is recommended, but these are very much down to personal preference) and a medical dictionary may be useful

You might be better posting a list of the books and I could tell you what you definately will, may and definately won't need

I'll just list the 1s that i've found i use the most:

Anatomy and Physiology (Basic) - Martini is fine, I personally prefer Saladin or Marieb
Anatomy - Grays Anatomy for students/ Moore and Dalley - pretty similar
Physiology - Guyton - fantastic book!
    Pharmacology - Rang or Neal
Histology - Didnt use a histology book all year. Just use the internet lol
    Immunology - Wood - a must buy!
Clinical Medicine - Kumar - very useful book used through out ur med school life

So all in all, pretty similar to wot J00ni posted

These are the ones i have got

Martini (for a good, easy to understand overview of anatomy and physiology)
    Moore for anatomy
    Guyton for physiology
Robbins for pathology (a lot of people bought Underwood because it is cheaper but not nearly as good in my opinion)
Rang for pharmacology (although most people got Waller)
Kumar and Clark for clinical medicine
The medical dictionary that you get given free in freshers week.

I didn't bother buying wood immunology, £30 for a book like 100 pages long, rip off, I borrowed one from the library and passed just fine. we didn't do neurology in first year, so i haven't got a neurology book yet.

The crash course books for cardiovascular and respiratory systems are really good for semester 2 but they are not necessary, i just borrowed them occasionally from people.

I would get as many as possible from the library in September, and see which ones you like before you go and buy them as they are around £50 each (apart from the crash courses which are £20 each).

The ones I would recommend buying are Martini, Guyton, Moore, Rang/Waller, and Robbins/Underwood.

Ian is quite right that the internet is great for histology, I don't know any medic in my year who bought a histology book.

    Oh and Guyton is amazing!

Thing is, if there is a chance to get one free it is definately worth having, especially considering how poorly histology is taught at manchester

Plus, there really is no need to own your own pathology book, if you can get one for free you should take the opportunity, and bring it if you can fit it in - but it's not essential

Wood is well worth the £20 it actually costs, explains concepts better than any other book i have read

I have got a histology book. I got it second hand for 5 punds or so and I have been actualy using it. Sad as it may sound I find some bits of histology interesting... If you can get it for free I would take it if you have spare space in your suitcase. Other then that there are 100s of them waiting in liblary as none is interested in them.

You don't have to bring all the books at once. Take them and bring them in stages. I assume you will go back home from time to time for weekends or holidays so you can bring some more stuff then.

You can buy lebcoats during medics freshers fair. I think they were 14 pounds each or something like that last year (somone correct me if I am wrong).

Do you need 1 or 2 lab coats for manc? I know some places want you to have 2. I have one from my degree but it's huge and I wouldn't really want to wear it in hospitals if you ever wear them that is but it is fine for labs and stuff.

I got 2.. I think if I remember correctly, that they tell you to buy 2 - 1 for labs and 1 for dissection. But i think most people get along fine with just one lab coat as long as you keep it clean

I guess it is a matter of opinion, i mean, i used my pathology book for all of the cases in first year, and as far the exams were concerned i don't think i would have been able to answer a lot of the questions (especially in semester two) if i hadn't made notes from a pathology book. I guess for semester one it isn't vital as the semester is mainly physiology, but i would not recommend being without a pathology book.

Wood is actually £30 now. Prices must have gone up since your day and I think it is not necessary. If you have the money to spend then by all means buy it, but if not then you can always just borrow it or similar books from the library or friends.
