Vixter is right, students need to have special circumstances, ie disability.
There are places to park on the public road on Grove Street and the road behind that, but you have to get there quick, after about 8.30am you've no chance during term time. You can also park further out in some of the residential areas if you don't mind a 15/20 minute walk.
Unfortunately the University have decided to sell off their car parks and start charging from next year, about £2 a day has been mooted (to start off with). So whether you'll still need a permit and then pay as well, or whether it will just be a free for all i don't know.

hiya, this may not be possible, but is there any hidden areas in and around the Medical School where you can park your car for free? does the medical school have a pay and display car park? i heard that the surrounding area around the med school is bit unsafe as well?

there are plenty of streets around you can park on, but no actual car parks that I know of. there is a hospital multi storey car park near by, which is pay and display. Also, the med school is in the red light district, which isnt the most selubrious of areas.
up to you really xif you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours

good idea to find out from the local council whether is it compulsory for a resident permit to park nearby roads, to avoid wheel clamping, fines etc etc.
