    Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award?

I'll be starting sixth form in September and have been thinking about the Silver DofE award, seeing as I've already got my bronze.

Would completing the silver award be greatly beneficial for my application to uni? I know you have to be able to show things like teamwork/leadership skills in things you've done, but would I still be able to show this as well as I would for DofE in something like being part of a sports team?

    Thanks in advance

if you're doing the silver just to put it on your ucas application then it won't help you much. It's what you gain from it i guess, e.g. if they ask where you have demonstrated your teamwork skills in the interview, you can mention the duke of edinburgh award. However being on a sports team will help you just as much so a silver award is not very useful at all, especially seeing as you already have bronze.

Yes, it can be very useful to show certain qualities about yourself. Being on a sports team etc is also good, but remember for Duke of Ed, you must do a sport, skill, and volunteering - so you will also be doing other useful extracurriculars, not just an expedition. So you can do other stuff as well as getting the Silver Award. So I think you should do it!

    Thanks for your replies

Rippy; Do you think it would be of any further benefit actually completing the D of E in regards to expeditions as I will already be doing sports, skills (hopefully first aid) and service (volunteering at an Old Perosns Home) anyway because of the timetable at my sixth form? (Lessons are from approx 9am to 3pm, then extra curricular activities, inc volunteering from 3pm - 5pm)

Well in my opinion, yes, since the expedition won't take up too much extra time, and it will get you a "recognised qualification" so to speak.

Why not just go into Direct Gold Award?

You'll save 6 months compared to doing Silver, then Gold... And also... Well, it's Gold =P

I really enjoyed doing silver and the expedition was lots of fun (apart twisting my ankle literally in the first hour and having to keep walking on it lol) so if you've got time then ucas application aside, why not do it .
