What's the shame in telling people you want to be a doctor? I get quite a kick from doing it (though the promised bounty of love from the fairer sex has yet to materialize I might add)
And if you do feel pressured or embarrassed by it, just remember you're having the last laugh - you're saving lives, making a (maybe small) difference, whilst doing something you love, whilst being paid a healthy sum for it.

Red face Cheers

Thanks everyone.... these are some really good answers to a daft question.

In response to Giella, I have been quizzing a couple of student doctor friends when they're back from uni... however, they both appear to be stark raving mad.. Is this normal, I wonder? Is this the future?!

From personal expereince, Id say that the one that survive medical school are the one who can divide work and play effectively. This means that if you happen to catch a student medic on a night out they can seem pretty mad but catch them at the library or straight off ward duty and they`re pretty serious and focused! First year though is total madness mingled with a bit of hard work!!!!

i think u shud tell whoever asks, i find that when people expect something of me im more likely to fulfil that 'thing'. Also, knowing that everyone thinks ull become a doctor is a sort of motivation in itself, call it pressure if u may, but if thats gna get u into med school its worth it. dnt keep it a secret, especially not from ur family. just ask urself.. whats the worst that could happen?? u might not get in right, but u just about every med applicant is thinkn the same as u...

TBH, I'm just keeping shtum because I can't be bothered to deal with the inevitable criticism from my parents day in, day out. At least I'll be able to get the grades because I can concentrate! And then one day...
vooom! Medical School! Buh-bye!
I can see how some people can't compute that, but then imagine your parents hate doctors, or 'scorn' them. :S

sticky it will elp to get sumone backin you though.

you need summat on par wif the weight of like a class of posh skool kiddies and a pantheon of teachers all willing you to get grade AAAs. thats a MASSIVE advantage to 'ave on your side.

Well, I have a problem of my own in that my parents don't support what I'm doing and think that I'm being silly for even trying. I can understand not wanting to tell them. I wanted to not tell them, and I even thought of ways for being able to do it on my own. I still intend to try and get through medical school without taking a penny from them, just to show them that I did it without their help. I regret telling them now, because they share none of my enthusiasm for it, and they won't even talk about it with me, yet I know if I get in, they'll be happy to brag about it then.
But you're still in school. You need your parents, even if you don't think you do. If you want some advice, watch Thankyou For Smoking. There's a great little scene in there about convincing parents to do something with a good argument or a good strategy. If you tell them, and I think you should, just find a really good way to do it. Work out all the things they would throw back at you and have a counterargument ready. They have to respect you for that, and if they don't, you can always throw that back at them. That what I do. If I know I put a good argument forward, and my parents didn't listen, I know they're disrespecting me by doing so and I can tell them that. It gives you another opportunity to try again.
Anyway, my personal issues are spilling all over this thread. I can relate would be the short version of that.

you could always try strategically mumbling 'mudisun', Igorina, everytime people ask you what you are applying to study.
