I'm 6"3 but i think we're getting a little off topic lol, go for the volunteering allie as im sure they'll understand that you want to be involved with the patients and may develop your experience there as you gain their trust

I volunteered at a day hospice, and sometimes I manned the phone and reception and sometimes I was with the patients. Both were good experiences: when they first asked me to spend the afternoon on reception I was dreading it, but it was a really good oppotunity to actually talk to the different healthcare and social workers and to pick up some advice on going into medicine and what they thought of their jobs. Plus it has made me a LOT more comfortable on the phone! Obviously, being with the patients was what I originally volunteered for and that was pretty awesome. If you want more hands on experience, have you thought about volunteering at a special needs school? I was with the severly disabled children and I was given more responsibilities and was allowed to observe more there (speech and physio therapy etc). It was really loud and lively there aswell, which made a change from the day hospice though I really enjoyed both.
Another thing, Allie, I think you should get a doctors note and a teachers report to go with your application bout the malaria if you think it affected your performance at GCSE. It could really count in your favour, and you`ve got nothing to lose. Medical schools do take exenuating circumstances to account.
PS Im 5"7

6'5 here. Not as good as you'd think Robien. True story: I was wearing a green hoody the other day and a girl in a passing car leaned out the window and sang "green giant!" at me to the advert tune.

wow everyone thankyou for the advice!
I phoned up my local hospice and sadly they said the only volunteering positions open to me (cos of my age) are working in the shop etc, as I cant have any contact with patients So I dont think it would be worth applying there.
Secondly Ive seen a GREAT thing on vinspired.com (a volunteering website thing) asking for a 16/17 year old to help out once a week at a special needs club for young people. The only problem is, its like half an hour away from where I live so my parents arn't really happy about it
However Ive spoken to my mum, and as she and my sister are both nurses, shes going to ask around the people she knows and try and find me somewhere to do work experience.
And as for the doctors/teachers note thing.. once I get that do I need to give it to my new college or with my application for uni in like 2 years?
again thanks everyone for so much help!
x
ps. I love being tall
