A question about PBL at Leicester to students
Hi all,
I was just wondering how Leicester students on the 5 year UG course find the structure/teaching of the course?
I know everyone has their own ways of learning, I just wondered how the group-based, more PBL orientated learning works for you? I've read there are not many lectures at Leicester and that there is a lot of emphasis on self-directed learning, and not that I mind this, but do you get much guidance on what you should be learning?
The website provides basic information so any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Firstly, don't dare suggest that it's PBL at interview or anything, they're very adamant that it isn't.
Our days usually have one or two lectures and a session of group work. There is a certain degree of self directed learning but you're generally told what to learn. I've only got a terms worth of experience, but most modules will give you some kind of self assessment questions each week so that you can test your knowledge. Addditionally, there are these "learning outcomes" which basically tell you what you need to know. So it's pretty directed.
But you do get your group, as in a PBL style course I guess. Personally, it's quite nice having a group, by now we all know each other and our strengths and weaknesses really well. Additionally to that, you tend to be in a room with the same other three groups every day so you get to know those 40 or so people quite well. But the eight other people in my group are awesome

Yup, pretty much what xylophonefairy said. To be honest, more or less all the information you need for the exams is in the lectures anyway. Group work sessions (for most modules) are just to reinforce the lecture information and get you to think about other ways of approaching the same knowledge (e.g. more clinically).
I love the mixed approach because im not a lecture person; i find it really hard sitting through a lecture, just have a really short attention span

Thank you both very much, most helpful

I wonder if you two could tell me as well about the phase II at Leicester (where you go on clinical study?) because it says you should expect to spend more than half your time away from Leicester in places surrounding Leicester. I was just wondering how this works with finance and accomodation etc?
Thank you

3 Hospitals in Leicester, Burton, Kettering, Lincoln, Boston, Peterbourgh, Northampton. Accomodation is provided at the out block hospitals (not in Leicester) free of charge. Blocks are about 7 weeks. I'm on grad course but phase 2 is same for us.

Hi guys.
Could anyone give me an idea of the ratio of lectures to group work in a typical week at leicester?
Thanks.

1.5:1, lectures:group work I would guess? It's roughly equal, but maybe with a couple more lectures.

Would it be possible for any of the first years or second years to send me their course timetable? I just wanted to see how the medical course at Leicester is?
Thanks a bunch!!
