    Graduating with honours

    Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone knows the criteria for graduating with honours at Leicester med school? I think it's a different system depending on the university, but can't seem to find any info on Leicester..

Let me know if you find out ... we are in the dark as well! It's some kind of mysterious points system based on performance in phase 1 and 2 known only to the medical school (but I think heavily weighted on finals). People kicked off this year because there were those who were average all year, did well in FPE and got honours ... whereas those who were consistent all through the course, got lots of distinctions throughout but weren't as razor sharp in the final exams ... didn't.

But I wouldn't worry about it too much - by the end of the course, you'll just be glad to finish

Lol will do.. so is it mainly based on the final year of medicine then? I'd love to just manage to make it through uni, but i'd like to think I still had a chance of graduating with honours!

That's slightly harsh, basing it mainly on finals. Surely all the work you've done towards your degree should count?

At least there is the possibility of honours! I couldn't find any references to it in the prospectuses.

From people who have just graduated ... I don't know how heavily finals is weighted when deciding honours, but it would seem that people who did very well in finals, but didn't necessarily excel during Phase 1/2 graduated with honours, whereas those who performed very well during the rest of the course (but didn't do anything outstanding in finals) did not.

Lizzie-Beth, did you just graduated or are you entering final year?

How many people actually managed to get honours without excelling throughout the medical school?

one would do well to look at the examination system of the med school as soon as you get into medical school. Else one can spend years of studying that amounts to nothing, end up burned out by year 5 and then getting a lower mark than those who were more strategic in their study plans over the 5 year course and perhaps focused on clinical skills more whilst you were learning muscles of the body and biochemistry that you will never use . if your med school weights most of your classification on years 5 and to a lesser extent year 4, you only 'ave yourself to blame if you dont make yourself aware of this from day 1.

our med school places emphasis mainly on CP2 (year 4/5-ish) and CP1 (year 3/4-ish) so it can be demortifying for those who worked for 75% marks in pointless modules for months on end in years 1 and 2 and 3 to receive lower marks than those

be warned - be smart about your studies or else you will waste time and energy that could be spent doing other more useful fings.

on the 'ole i've found that a pretty sizeable chunk of the med school 'avent made themselves aware of this, so you wouldnt be alone if you made this mistake.

Gizmos actually right........there is sooo much to learn in medicine, you should defo be strategic in your studying and place more emphasis on things you will actually need in the future. This is a big mistake I have only realised in the last few months at the end of 2nd year!!! And have gone through a LOT more stress than others because I tried to learn EVERYTHING!!!

Gizmos - that makes sense. but at the end of the day, how it works still depends on the medical school. What perceived may not be true....
