its atypical to get double distinction in finals if you hadnt do that well throughout your years in med school!
i cant believe that.

no its not, its called looking before you leap.
you can learn a million anatomy references but it dont matter one jot if you cant treat a patient properly.
treat the patient, not the medical encyclopedia."...reminds me of childhood memories,
when Everything was as bright as the bluest skies.."

i so disagree with you, gizmo. You theory is right when it comes to working life. But that doesnt apply to finals.

thanks for info claire.... i was pretty sure that I wouldn't get an honours before, now I know for sure that I won't haha!
you can get merits/distinctions in a number of ways:
1) certain number of excellents in phase 1
2) 2 excellents in your phase 1 SSC modules = distinction, 1 excellent and 1 pass = merit
3) performance in your IPE in 4th yr - the way this is worked out changes every year. For instance, I know some people who passed 15/15 q's in the written paper and still came away without a merit.
4) performance in FPE.
To be honest, I wouldn't worry about getting an honours. Yes, it's a nice bonus - but essentially you have to remember why you're actually doing medicine.... focus on learning to a) pass the exams and b) be a good Dr. Plus, how many people actually get an honours? the vast majority just get the bog standard MBChB. that's my 2 cents anyway.Last edited by thepriceofreality; 28-09-2009 at 02:39 AM.

Okay just got this email on the eBulletin....thought it might be a tad useful:
''Nominations for the award of Honorary Degrees
All members of the University are invited to submit nominations for the award of Honorary Degrees for consideration by the Honorary Degrees Board at its meetings scheduled for the Autumn Term.
The Committee will wish to have evidence that the nominee has a distinguished record in his or her field and has made a significant contribution locally, nationally or internationally and/or have contributed conspicuously to the life of the University of Leicester. The Committee would especially welcome nominations for senior female candidates, for ethnic minority candidates and for candidates in the disciplines of Medicine, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering as these groups are generally under-represented.
Nominations must be made in writing (preferably electronically) and should include the nominee’s full name, title and address and be accompanied by a supporting statement and a brief CV if one is available. Nominees should not be informed of the nomination and nominators will not be notified of the decision of the Committee. Nominations should be sent in confidence to the Vice-Chancellor by Monday 12 October.''
Its not just grades that matter...

Maybe Gizzy

I wonder what 'senior females' means...graduate females? but I didnt know you had to be nominated for it, they should assess your grades etc when you finish and accordingly award Honours without having to be nominated for it... :S
