Operating department practice > medicine
Hi eveyone (or those who read this
)
Just a quick question,
does any one know if leicester would allow someone who has completed the operating department practice diploma at their uni to apply for medicine? I know it sounds dumb but what's the difference between a diploma and a degree?
Not knowing that is probably why I'm confused as to whether someone who completed this 'diploma' would be eligible for their graduate entry to med.
Hmm
Anyone?

im not too sure, but i think a degree is at a slightly higher academic level in comparrison to a diploma, but to be sure if it is eligible for the 4 year course you will have to email leicester. i emailed to ask if my biochemistry degree would be relevent, but they said no, as i lacked the year experience. Leicester wants work exp too.

Thanks for the answer. Hmm yeah thats what I thought. It was just a general query because the operating department diploma is I think 2-3years and is mainly focused on working within clinical settings/hospitals with patients so it would definatley be invaluable experience.
Yeah, again, thanks for the answer. btw when they said no to you because of the lack of experience was that experience in a care setting you lacked? I thought they accepted graduates with a first/second without experience onto the extra-year med course.

Hi there,
Leicester to my knowledge only accept degrees. A Diploma is only studying at level 2 and degree is level 3, you must have level 3 standard to be accepted onto any medicine course as a graduate, five year or GEP course. Even nurses who have a nursing diploma with years of experience i believe have been turned down because they didnt meet the mandatory requirements of a BSc Hons at least 2i classification.
Hope this helps, good luck
P.S perhaps the person meets the right GCSE and A level requirements and is entering as an undergraduate, but apart from that they wouldnt be accepted onto GEP with a diploma.
one more thing heres the link to leicester university website with the admission criteria for GEP

Diploma is 240 CAT points, degree 360. A top up degree would be an acceptable way of using prior learning without doing three years full time.

Curly is correct. Unless you have the entry requirements for the 5 year course, you will have to get a degree at 2.1 classification or better before you can apply to Leicester. You can top up many diplomas with a 1-2 year university course.
