I went to Leeds!
Hi Liamlcfc,
I went to Leeds to read Medical Sciences!! I graduated in 2002. I have to say that it is a fab degree and I think that it will stand you in good ground for medicine. It doesn't just stand you in good ground academically but it also boots your self confidence, you perfect your studying skills, you learn to mult-itask and you will also learn to prioritise and deal with lots of stress. I feel that, generally, it is important to experience these skills if you intend on reading for a very challenging degree such as medicine.
The course at Leeds cover physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology- to name a few! You even have the option of learning all about clinical trials and GCP!! Although, the clinical trial aspect of the course was taken as an elective!
The head of the medical sciences department in Leeds is very supportive and you will have annual appraisals. These are to monitor your progress and help you with any issues that you may have- course wise and personal.
I think the course has stood me in good ground for what I do today. I monitor clinical trials on behalf of pharmaceutical companies like GSK and Roche. So the clinical trial module of the course proved extremely useful!!
I have to say that I chose to read medical sciences at Leeds because it was the closest subject I could think of that was somewhat related to medicine. I was rejected from all other unis for medicine and I didn't want to take a year out. I chose to read medical sciences with the view of applying for medicine straight after I finish. Unfortunately, due to financial reasons, I couldn't apply for medicine straight after and so I have been working for the past two years trying to save enough money to go back and read medicine. I am hoping to apply for medicine for the 2005 academic entry.
Friends of mine on the same course at Leeds are now studying medicine at Leeds. They are having a great time and are really happy with the medical course structure. Also, they will favour medical applicants who have studied at Leeds before. After all, you would have established a good rapport with the majority of the lecturers on your medical sciences course (these lecturers are the same for medicine for the first two years of your study at least!) and will bound to remember you!
I wish you the very best of luck with your course!! If you have any other questions about the course or Leeds then please feel free to pm me!
