I went to Leeds!

Hi Liamlcfc,

I went to Leeds to read Medical Sciences!! I graduated in 2002. I have to say that it is a fab degree and I think that it will stand you in good ground for medicine. It doesn't just stand you in good ground academically but it also boots your self confidence, you perfect your studying skills, you learn to mult-itask and you will also learn to prioritise and deal with lots of stress. I feel that, generally, it is important to experience these skills if you intend on reading for a very challenging degree such as medicine.

The course at Leeds cover physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology- to name a few! You even have the option of learning all about clinical trials and GCP!! Although, the clinical trial aspect of the course was taken as an elective!

The head of the medical sciences department in Leeds is very supportive and you will have annual appraisals. These are to monitor your progress and help you with any issues that you may have- course wise and personal.

I think the course has stood me in good ground for what I do today. I monitor clinical trials on behalf of pharmaceutical companies like GSK and Roche. So the clinical trial module of the course proved extremely useful!!

I have to say that I chose to read medical sciences at Leeds because it was the closest subject I could think of that was somewhat related to medicine. I was rejected from all other unis for medicine and I didn't want to take a year out. I chose to read medical sciences with the view of applying for medicine straight after I finish. Unfortunately, due to financial reasons, I couldn't apply for medicine straight after and so I have been working for the past two years trying to save enough money to go back and read medicine. I am hoping to apply for medicine for the 2005 academic entry.

Friends of mine on the same course at Leeds are now studying medicine at Leeds. They are having a great time and are really happy with the medical course structure. Also, they will favour medical applicants who have studied at Leeds before. After all, you would have established a good rapport with the majority of the lecturers on your medical sciences course (these lecturers are the same for medicine for the first two years of your study at least!) and will bound to remember you!

I wish you the very best of luck with your course!! If you have any other questions about the course or Leeds then please feel free to pm me!

medical sciences

hiya,
im currently about to enter the final yr of medical sciences at leeds. well overall its been a lot of hard work and its very tough to achieve the best grades but not impossible with hard work from the start! im hoping to do medicine after this and doing a Bsc gives u the best possible preparation for medicine. but be aware thats its extremely tough to get in esp on the graduate entry courses. leeds medical school do not favour students from leeds at all, i know lots of people that have been rejected so dont rely on that! u would be better off going to somewhere like Kings College or Liverpool if u want that. the course is very good and generalised and u get to do what u want in 2nd and 3rd yr, but they have scrapped the clinical sciences option now.
i hope this helps and good luck with it all

I think the anatomy options may be limited now too, as I was talking to a guy in the final year of medical sciences who was disappointed by this.

i went to Leeds clearing day at the Biomedical sciences dept. after i was offered a place doing Pharmacology. I mentioned to the Head that I was interested in grad. entry Medicine and that maybe Medical Sciences would be better for this? But he strongly suggested that the course would not be very useful and in order to get a good Honours degree Pharmacology and Physiology would be better. Well I have an offer elsewheres for Biochem. so you can have my Pharmacology place if u want ^_^
