Hi
I live in York and go in by train every day. My friend lives in Huddersfield and drives in. We both leave at 7am to get in for 9am, due to heavy traffic/train timetables. We've both managed fine so far but are moving to Leeds next year. This is partly because we're missing out socially but mainly so we don't have to spend so much time travelling.
There are a few other first years that live in Bradford etc who travel. There is also a second year who lives on the outskirts of York and drives in every day.
The teaching timetable is mostly 9am starts but to balance that you usually finish at 1pm and only have one day per week til 4/5pm. My friend and I usually go home early rather than work in the library to avoid the evening rush hour.
If you are travelling for over an hour by train you will need to think about how long it will take you to get ready and get to the train station, and how you will feel about this in winter when you're travelling in the dark. It can be very tiring and you may end up not studying as much as you would like. It will be too busy in the mornings to read your notes on the train, but it is possible when you're travelling home during the day.
Of course if you're living at home and having meals made for you etc, it may not seem so bad! You can always try it for the first year whilst the timetable is relatively light.
Hope this helps you to decide.
