leeds and GCSES
Hi,
im hoping to apply for med for 2009 entry, I have been lookin at leeds med school and I am very intrested in it, I have read the gcse requirements in the prospectus and I meet them. However when I phoned up the addmissions tutors told me, they usually end up interviewing applicants whose gcses are musch higher then the minimun requirement. So if theres anyone who has an offer form leeds or had an interview, (and you dont mind) could you please tell me what your gcses were, so then I can compare to see if mine are similar, because if mine are lower then the average I may not apply there. Im really sorry for the long post, and would be greatful for any help, but of course if you would rather not post your results then I understand, lol! xx
p.s I know theres loads more to a med application then just gcses, but im guessin they still pay a bit of a role!

Hey i dont think GCSE results are too important in the application, as long as you have the minimum requirement or above and a good overall application you still have a chance of getting an interview/offer. If your gcse grades aren't too good then as long as you have other things to offer in your personal statement and good AS/A Level/IB results your still in with a chance. The admissions team score your application on several categories, gcses only playing a small part. I got 6 As (no a*s), 4 Bs (including maths and english) and 1 C and got an unconditional offer from leeds & 2 others this year. So going to leeds in september. Hope that helps xx

Leeds seem to be pretty lenient when it comes to GCSEs. As long as you have a decent clutch of As then you should be ok I reckon.
They will interview people with much higher grades than the minimum requirements because most applicants to medicine exceed them. By not interviewing people with higher grades they'd be cutting out the majority. Most medical schools are that way.
PS: One of the reasons i'm choosing to apply to Leeds is because of my relatively poor GCSE performance (1A* 6A 2B 1C).Third Year Medical Student: Keele

I don't think you should be worried about what others have got. If you meet the entry requirements then it's fine. Grades are only one part of the criteria, you need to meet the rest to secure an interview too. You'll do fine! If you've got the GCSE's and your AS's are fine, apply!

Looking at what people on this thread have said, what do you think?
"GCSE results aren't too important in the application"
"as long as you have the minimum requirement or above and a good overall application you still have a chance of getting an interview"
"Leeds seem to be pretty lenient when it comes to GCSEs"
"If you meet the entry requirements then it's fine"Last edited by Kinkerz; 18-09-2008 at 02:45 PM.

From what i've seen Leeds don't select candidates for interview heavily based on GCSE grades, that is simply a hurdle you must pass by meeting the minimum requirements as someone said earlier this thread
.
A much more important aspect to your application is your personal statement which Leeds prioritise and select candidates for interview based on a good one
. So make sure you take your time and write a good one!
, good luck anyways!.
