yeah i think they got quite a beating in the press cos the guy had failed and wasn't offered any help. strange cos other med schools i went round did offer this. there were posters everywhere inviting people to talk if they have problems.
leeds definately have this "if you have a problem, we don't care, it means you can't cope" kind of attitude. of course that problem could even be your dad nearly dying and they still don't care.

whilst i was at bradford the staff also said that leeds don't see problems as their problem which they can help you with, but yours.

i think their attitude is going to have to change. yes in the past when almost all med students came from rich wealthy functional two parent families, when divorce rates were low, they probably didn't have many students with financial or family problems. now they have students in financial difficulty and coping with parents divorce.as well as many other things.

and the pressure to succeed as well, it is true some asian students are under more pressure than others because of their families, and again nothing is offered.

unfortunately, as it always seems to be in every situation, it has taken someones death for them to realise, actually we better offer some support.

ps. currently their idesa of support is "if you can't cope, resit the year" still needs improvement.

i know your point, as in they kick people out all the time. but i would have thought the third year would be the turning point. i've generally got the impression from leeds that first and second years are easily "disposed of" ,shall we say, with out them even blinking an eye.
as for me if i got kicked out i could go back to year two clin sci, but for some thats it. they have no where to go.

Could some of the students try to set up a phone service (samaritan style but for the college specifically) and apply for funding (for training and such) from the college making it very public so that they can't be turned down?

Hi Muffin,
I hear what you say, Muffin, but in my case, I got kicked right at the end of the 4th and penultimate year. I didn't die (somewhat obviously), but it was a shock. I still get nightmares about it. Anyway, as I think I wrote elsewhere, I went abroad (central Europe but not Czech Republic) and qualified. I returned with many positive experiences but I thought I would sit the T.R.A.B. test-formality, but I was met with the 'get 100%-correct-or-fail' mentality of the P.L.A.B. Looong story. Then I returned abroad and did equivalent of PRHO. I felt like a doctor despite the pay being 'pennies' and having to be supported by family. So, when I was at Leeds med school, getting kicked at end of year 4 or even 5 (someone passed medicine but failed surgery & was booted) was no problem for the school then, in the 1980s. The panel of professors told me that I could work on the basis of my intercalated year - but I had done that out of interest, not to work in that field. Only now am I trying to return to medicine - again, loong story.

there is plenty of support at leeds these days...but if you fail an exam, fail the resit, fail the year again, fail that resit - you're clearly not competent.

leeds has a duty to your potential future patients...

it all depends on what bit you fail, any circumstances you might have and the decision of the progress comittee.
for example i failed the first spot test but there is a second one in which you can make up any marks. hopefully i have so as regards coursework there may be an opportunity to compensate in other bits.
the intergrated summative however is different. you need 50% on this to pass. if you fail you are enititled to a resit (long story, but i went and checked and you do have the right to a second attempt) if you fail the resit, then the decision as to what happens goes to a progress committee. here they look at how well you have done during the year, how well you did in the formative (so work hard for this) and any personal circumstances.
best case senario is that they let you resit the whole year, worst case, they kick you out.

there is another option depending on any personal circumstances you have, i had a lot of shit happen this year and was offered another option, but thats the worse that could happen, so you don't need to know that yet.

you have to be prepared that at some point you might fail something. the thing with most med students is that many have sailed through school getting straight A's, never failed anything, think med school will be a breeze and so when they do fail, all hell breaks loose.
having failed AS and A2 modules, struggled to get to med school and finally got in after an access course, i (and the others who came from clin sci bradford) are more prepared when things go a bit to pot.

if things do go wrong, best thing to do is don't go sit in a flump and sulk for weeks, get back up, get studying and pass the next exam/coursework.
