I think you need to decide what the real issue is: does your mother not want to 'let go', or is it you? Perhaps this is just a rather extreme form of a really normal problem; mothers do worry and get upset when kids leave home for the first time (and fathers too... they just tend to be more reserved about it!)

Either way, uni is a big transition. But as everyone who has already done it has said here, leaving home (leaving mother behind) is an essential part of becoming an adult. You don't have to drink to have fun at university; in fact, the whole point is that you are genuinely free - for the first time - to think for yourself, take responsibility and make the big decisions on your own. That way, it is possible to be open-minded about other people's actions and true to your own beliefs at the same time. So even if you intend to be a paragon of virtue for five years, you still need to do it without your mother!!! I worry that if you don't make the leap on your own, you won't develop the maturity, confidence, independence and life experience that you will need to be a competent doctor.

You have an amazing opportunity. Please don't ruin it!

No way aspiration:| Nonononononono. If i could come and shake u i would. No matter how lovely ur mother is [so's mine] there is NO way u should ever want to take her with u i mean, half the POINT of uni is to be able to survive on your own without ur parents back up [cept for financial purposes ]. Its like following ur friend to the uni they're going to! Uni is for making new friends, uni's for having the fun u couldnt have with the restrictions of living at ur parents house [oh an the degree thing]. I mean if you really hate the 1st year away from her, then i suppose u could reconsider but i don't see you ever coming back to this conclusions she should come with you. Just WHY- I can't get my head around it?!

Do u live in leeds? If you don't, applying out suggests you kinda did want to move out, just a tiny bit, get away from it, just a little bit?

I hope you make the right decision. x

My mum's quite liberal (and she's Asian). We'd have a smoke together and at work parties we're the first ones up going crazy on the dance floor. But I still wouldn't bring her to uni with me...

Well, I don't know if it necessarily is absolute social death though, I mean there are people who live at home while at uni and while it is hard to do and have the same amount of fun, they do still get some of the university experience.

I definitely wouldn't recommend your mum coming with you though, she will be so socially isolated herself, as she will know even less people than you since she won't be meeting new people at uni the way you will, and thus will be totally dependent on you to be her friend and spend much more time with her.

As others have said, she will have to let go at some point, and there are plenty of asian girls who have been in exactly the same position as you who have done it and managed well. She will have to let go at some point, it might as well be now, as that would allow you to have a better time, honestly.

About dogs, generally halls and rented accommodation don't allow pets, sadly.

Seriously now. No one would even consider taking their mum to uni. Hell, I wouldn't want to be in the same uni with MY kids, my daughter is already watching me like a hawk and letting me have it every time I dare talk to a male person I'm not married to.

No one would seriously consider this option. That's why I'm sure it's all a joke. A scary one tho...
I'm not certain, but i think some of the more fundamentalist parts of the islam debates have revealed that aspiration, or at least aspirations's family has more than slight sympathy for certain aspects some of us vehemently disagree with...

And along with such strong transmission of religious views, in my experiences, comes other cultural norms. Such as as acceptance of living with family for the whole of one's life...(hence my comment that she either was or sounded asian).

Even if i'm wrong with the islam thing, and i may well be mixing people up, i'm not sure how fake this is. We'll all sound right fools if it is, i grant you...
