Leeds Vs HYMS

Hey everybody!

I could really use you help, since we're all bascially on the same boat, and we're all expected to make a decision about our futures soon! AHHH!!

anyway, i would really appreciate if someone could weigh out the pros and cons of each uni... in terms of syllabus, resources, standards, reputation, areas, cultures etc Anything really, cuz right now i'm kind of standing at the begining of a cross roads and have no idea wherer to turn next.

If leeds thn why leeds and why not HYMS? and if HYMS thn why not leeds?


this could really help me in making my decision...i mean i aready know a bit about each uni but it helps hearing what other people think..or what other factors i should consider.

NB: i am international student, so i am concerned with how multicultural the areas are. (i figured the more multicultural, the more likely i am to get accepted and not get stared at)

HYMS is PBL guided, if i recal correctly Leeds is lecture based for the first two years.

i'llonly know my allocated area after i accept the offer:S

i'm an international student from Oman (i know ur going: "huh?where's that", close to saudi arabia and dubai)

costs are prtty much the same in both unis so those aren't factors that i need to take into consideration

I live in York, with friends in Leeds.
York = large market town, not really a city except the cathedral. Historic, beautiful town, campus a mile or two out in a small village with a big lake & many many ducks. Peaceful & safe, many good pubs which are main focus for 'going out'.
Leeds = proper city, much more multicultural (York has one tiny mosque, Leeds has lots of big ones), bigger university in the middle of town, the big-city stuff you'd expect.
Both universities have lots of 'student stuff' going on to get involved with, and you will have a good time at either if you get into things.
Never been to Hull.
Is there anything you are particularly interested in doing?

basically i want to make the most of the uni experience and i want to be in a multicultural place... i don't want to leave home to go to another home thts miles away, if u get what i mean.

i live in the capital of oman with basically 1.5 million people in it if not less, there's hardly anythign to do or see and id on't want to face the same thing in Uni.

even though i doubt tht doing medicien at uni will leave me with much time for going out and seeing and experiencing things!

Well i live in between Leeds and York, and have family in the Hull area.
My pref is Leeds, just because its more lively and there's so much happening there. The campus is in the centre of Leeds and its a very student friendly city. Also theres many great bands playin at the university

York is beautiful (even with the eyesore known as the Yorkshire Eye). Things are more centered towards the campus, just because its a bit further out.

Hull, well tbh i dnt like it. When i go there, theres not much happening. Hull has its own student union club called assylum which looks fine. The accomadation is ok, its recommended to go in the houses just as there more social. I didnt like the area, but the ppl who showed us around were lovely and so welcoming. Its much cheaper to live in Hull after year 1.

Thanks! it is helpful, your one of the few ppl that actually had smthgn negative to say lol! i keep on sayinng c'mon ppl there has to be SMTHNG u dnt like! i mean obviously all places have pros and cons, it's just a matter of how bad the negatives are which will be the reason for declining offer.

now fingers crossed leeds accepts me so tht i atleast have a choice to make!

Thanks.... i think leeds will be my top choice (just cause its the only med offer i got) but also it is my No.1
Think i'll pros have Leeds as my backup incase....ok i love leeds... bit obvisous isnt it.

Dont take my advice on the unis, im only one opinion! You really have to see for yourself. I know one person who went to leeds doing teaching, didnt like it and transferred to York and preferred it there. Its all a matter of opinon.

Well i live about 15 minutes from hull so can say quite a lot about it.

1. the city itself is not that great! Especially compared with leeds.

2. However, it does have pretty good nightlife, with several clubs and a LOT of bars, great for a night out! and it can be as cheap or as expensive as you like!

3. Hull can have quite a good music scene, with a few bands playing in the Uni's student union or in various clubs, it sucks compared with Leeds, but is really good compared with York.

4. It is a really cheap place to live, my firend rented a really nice house, everything included, for about £60 a week?

5. Transport can be quite expesive in the east yorkshire area.

6. Hull Student was voted best in England i think!

7. Failry good for shopping, just had a new smallish shopping centre built, but again not great compared to leeds!

Hope this helps somewhat to the place rather than the course etc. Im personally choosing Leeds over HYMS just for some distance from home in case i get allocated to hull!
