Leeds Ranking Mythbuster
Firstly, let me just say that i think the medical school league tables are completely worthless, and have said so on many occasions. However it seems that it has entered the general medical-applicant psychae that Leeds is ranked 24th and is considered to be rubbish.
Every year applicants raise concerns with the course at Leeds because of this urban myth. (it was only ranked low when the old course was assessed using the new GMC criteria).
To set the record straight once and for all, the University of Leeds is currently ranked 20th overall, with almost identical scores to Nottingham and Birmingham. It is extremely popular and boasts a student population of 34,000. The Leeds Medical School itself is currently ranked 9th (out of 30) just below Imperial College and Aberdeen.
For more information see The Guardian Unlimited University Guide 2008
So please, PLEASE dont slag off leeds for its low ranking anymore - it has a very respectable ranking, however irrelevant this might be!!

Yeah, I find people are being extremely shallow deciding their universities solely based on the rankings. Medical school is medical school, there has to be a certain standard to it. There is no rubbish ones, theres just ones that doesn't suit you.

Hear hear. I get so fed up of them! Particularly when you'd have to pay me for me to want to go to the top-ranked med schools... I'd much rather go to a med school I love than one that impressed lots of blokes with clipboards.

wen i applied i didnt even bother looking at rankings.
i talked to many docs whilst preparing for my leeds and lpool interviews, and virtually all of them said go for leeds and how respected the medical school was and how leeds boasts the biggest teaching hosp in europe.
i believe lpool has a very high rating , but in the medcial world the people ive talked to dont rank it anywhere near manc and leeds . maybe thats to do with the 2 major cities dont know ? but ive been told by many senior medics to go to leeds , and was over the moon when i got the offer.
so i wont hear a word against leeds

I too was always under the impression that Liverpool was at the top of the league tables, but apparently its 28th. Isn't it strange how we have these preconceived ideas about how medical schools are ranked, even though they are a) untrue and b) irrelevant!
Anyway, good choice. You will have a great time in Leeds.

Nobody does. A medical degree is a medical degree.
The rankings are so fluid anyway - one year the University of BucksFizz is riding high at number 2 and the next year it's way down at 47.
They way they score it is also a bit silly and not really reflective of the quality of the medical school - spend per student, for example, what effect does that have on the quality of the doctor graduating from the University?

Exactly, the rankings are completely different to last year, no way the Unis have changed so much in 1 year... just showing how bad the tables are
