    MBChB Hons?

    Hi,

I'm at leeds now and was wondering whether any current/past students could tell me how many people get awarded Hons when they graduate, and whether it is a realistic academic goal for an average B student...

    Thanks

You can get honours in an intercalated BSc, but not in a MBChB. However, it is possible to be awarded distinction or merit. Usually this involves coming in the top 5% of the year or so when it comes to finals, and may involve a viva also.

Nick, I'm afraid this just isnt true: at Leeds. MBChB (Hons) is awarded to those students who accumulate enough honours points during their time at university. approx 2-5% of students in each year earn honors. The honors system changes regularly hence the number of points you have at any given stage of your undergraduate career can change. Details can be found in the Asessment Documentation availiable from the Learning & Teaching office (and online somewhere) - including the current honors system.

In answer to the original question: keep an open mind and try your best. You need to consistently achieve B grades in the majority of your summative examinations to get hons. Dont pin your hopes on it though, at the end of the day it is not going to make that much difference to your F1 application.

Well there you go. I must say that I'd never come across a medical degree that allows honours before, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I have been getting some of the honours points for the first 2 years but i was just thinking about how much harder it will be in the later years, any ideas?

It is harder after year 2 as the only hons points avaliable are for SSCs and end of year exams (ie the integrated summative and OSCEs) which are much harder in years 3,4,5. To get honors u also used to have to get the two points from finals, however i think they have changed it now so that these are not essential - which should make things marginally easier.

My advice is not to think about it too much. Keep working like you are working and just see what happens once you get to fifth year!

Am currently in final year, and you still have to get 2 points this year in order to get honours. Are they changing it again for the future? Don't pin your hopes on it - as I've discovered, you can get seriously disappointed right at the last moment. It's a great recipe for being totally demotivated just before finals.

Current assessment guide can be found on Nathan Bodington under the assessments section. Yeah, I've been told that it's quite deceptively easy to get honours points in Phase I. It's in Phase II and III where the majority of people lose out.
