LURE is a brand new scheme in its first year of operation at the medical school. There are only a handful of second years on the programme (is about 5 if i remember correctly) so unless they are on here you are not going to find much more about the ins and outs.

However if you are interested in persuing a career in academic medicine, there are additional opprtunities to explore.

So if u join that scheme would your timetable be same as all the other medics who are not involved in the scheme?

Yes, the scheme encourages the selected students (who must be performing very highly academically already) to partake projects within their selected area of interest for a number of their SSCs during second and third year in addition to work in labs over their summer vacations.

It might be 2 silly Q's, but first of all, the high academic students, r they chosen or do they volunteer to do it? Secondly, by joining LURE, does that inclined to mean that your future career lies in research?

Students have to apply to be involved in the scheme. The scheme is only in its second year, so I'm not sure how popular/competitive it has been (I'm in fifth eyar after BSc, so it wasn't available when I was in first year). I think prospective students have to fill out a form and then the shortlisted ones give a presentation.

Doing LURE doesn't restrict you to doing anything career-wise. Obviously the organisers are looking for someone interested in research, but as for future careers, it may put you off research or it may encourage you to emark a career in academic medicine. Or you could be a normal consultant, but still do lots of research.

Hi, I'm currently one of the students doing the LURE scholarship. At the moment, I'm still in the planning stage of the academic project I hope to start this summer (and continue through the intercalated year), so I can't really comment too much on the pros and cons of the scheme, as it's quite early to comment. However, I can say that it's a very unique and exceptional opportunity to pursue a research project and find about academic medicine, whilst coming into contact with professors in the field.

Yeah, as explained earlier, most of the work that you carry out is over the summer, and before then you're expected to read around in your own time. So, you do have a normal timetable, but with some added responsibilities of the project that you intend to pursue.

When you apply for the project, they do take into account your past academic achievements. You have to apply to the project specifically and they interview the students selected. No, your future career isn't set in stone by any means. However, they do expect you to show some interest in pursuing research in the future. Personally, I hope to become a clinical academic, in the sense that I hope to practice as a clinician and carry out research side by side.
