2nd year, end of term 1 exams

Hello,

are there any 3rd years out there who would care to share some pearls of wisdom to us second years about the end of first term exams?

We've been told that we get 50 short answer questions for PoD and 25 MCQs for GID. But that's about it.

How short are the short answer questions?
What's the best way to prepare for them?
Will we get asked stuff that wasn't in the lecture but that is in Underwood?
What's the best way to prepare for GID?
Are there any sample GID questions knocking about?
Does anyone know anywhere where I might be able to get some past papers?

Thanks muchly folks,
B

Brian! how you doing,

So long as its the same as when i did it, the short answer questions are usually single sentence qns with one or two word answers (a bit like spot test qns).

I found that underwood was enough information. As with all med schl exams, whilst the topics are set by the lectures its usually fair game for them to ask questions outside the lecture material to test your self-directed learning etc!

GID was a pain in the arse (i seem to remember being hung over in all the lectures), i baught Emery's Elements of Medical Genetics which got me through as i recall.

Unfortunately there are never any past papers apart from those that the med school decide to put on Nathan Bod - and they rarely refelct what the actual exam will be like.

I wouldnt worry too too much, as long as you know the key bits of information (from Underwood etc) you should be fine!

All the best, and i shall see u on Tuesday - although i might be late, im coming from Harrogate.

I'm afraid I have to apologise on behalf of our year for the POD exam. When I was in second year we just had a workbook which we had to fill in and hand in to be marked. The workbook was basically a cut and paste exercise from Underwood... however served as a base for revision notes.

However our year (for some unknown reason) said they didn't like the workbook (???!!!) and so they decided to change it to an exam.

there is really no book that you can just pick up and have a browse through that would empart upon you any really useful information (its like advising you to read through the Oxford English Dictionary before bed just for kicks).

I would recommend a more general book to widen your horizons a bit, such as House of God (Samuel Shem), Bedside Stories: Confessions of a Junior doctor (Michael Foxton) or Bodies (Jed Mercurio). They all give a great insight into the medical profession and in my opinion are essential reading for anyone at, or thinking about applying to medical school.

I recon you could learn a bit from flicking through Tortora & Derickson - http://tinyurl.com/yga984 I used it more in my first year than any other book.
