I really think i will be rejected by my 4 medical schools (one of them being leeds) this year... when this happens, I will take up clinical sciences in bradford uni... if i'm going to do that, then i don't need to do well in my A levels.. great!!

There are many advantages to applying to leeds uni via the clinical sciences route.

firstly, I won't be wasting a year.
And it means that instead of spending year 1 in leeds uni, I'll be spending it at bradford uni.... and saving on all the transport costs!! lol!! also will enjoy being at bradford uni!!
And of course, I am allowed to fail my A levels but still be in the same boat as those who passed and got in straight away into leeds uni.
And is it easier to get in this way than the normal route? i imagine it would be.

the down side:
if i don't get into leeds uni, I've wasted a year and all that hard work was a waste! especially as leeds uni expects you to still be doing work experience!

so ermmm is there any reason for me to work hard for my A levels?
Yes!! Trust me, if you are capable of getting the grades you need to get into medical school then work at it. 1st year clinical sciences is harder than 1st year med at Leeds (so I've been told) because we have to prove that we're capable of studying medicine. Plus there's the issue that you might not get in. There are other threads on the subject of clinical sciences, you might want to read them. PM me if you have more questions but clin sci is not easy I'll tell you that now.

So your saying that you can get the grades but cant be bothered?

Clinical science have many determined people in there and there are only 20 places to leeds. And everyone that's in that course that I know of tells me how hard it is.

So why take this route if you have the grades and can make it stright into medicine? Just to save money on travel? Well I think its better starting and one uni and staying there..and making friends that are going to stay with you for your duration at uni.

Your limiting your chances by going into this course and also limiting other peoples chance who are determined and unfortunately dont have the grades to get stright into medicine.

Down fall: if unfortunately your not the 20 people to transfer to leeds, you'll have to continue with clinical science and then apply as a gradute, which is has said before harder to get into.

All the best

????? Yikess, you just need to work harder! You will be under a lot more stress and will have to work a lot harder for your Medicine degree than you do for your A levels. If the money for the biology trip is problem then speak to your school - all schools should now have funds in place to help finance educational visits/equipment etc for those who are finding it difficult to pay.

yeh but i don't mind working hard in my clinical sciences 1st year or working hard in my medicine degree years... because the info that i will be learning will be directly useful and so interesting... as opposed to carrying out a massive chem investigation on an obscure topic just so they can assess whether i'm capable or not and learning all kinds of other topics that require much work... no bio trip money is affordable but just not worth it

anyway, i've been thinking a bit more...

since clinical sciences 1st year will be much competiton, i should perhaps apply to the foundation year, in which i will have more chance of getting selected... than those who apply directly to leeds med school with As, or those who apply through clinical sciences first year...

but the risk is that i will have to do badly at my A levels... i know all of this sounds very strange, but if noone else thinks like this, then it should work to beat off the competiton...

i'm just not sure of it which is why i'm asking advice from here

plus foundation year will mean that i can apply through UCAS again to 4 other unis, showing them that i have passed foundation year wonderfully despite bad A levels...

right now, i'm going to ring UCAS as I'm considering another option as well, but won't mention that one yet.

Our biology was great for fun. I admit we didnt do much work.

Some of the people in my school didnt go to the biology trip and they did another coursework so you can see if you can do that.

I'm sorry what??? Foundation year IS competive And also there are many mature students there. And Leeds does not always allow 20 people to transfer.

But why do you want to do bad in your A levels?? Doesnt make sense at all.

And why dont you have work experience?

If you really wanted to do medicine you should have been thinking about that way in front.

And how do you know that your 'wonderfully' in foundation year?? The way of learning at uni is much different.

I just dont understand why you thinking like this? Especially when you can get the grades.

I think I'm just wasting my time writing this.

lol i think you are too pb! :P

i actually regret applyin 2 clinical sciences because theres only one chance! and if you don't get into leeds you wont get another chance until you graduate...and even then im not too sure many med schs in the uk like clinical sciences as a degree or somethin? i read a thread on this earlier can't remember but only 3 uni's here thought it was ok...

i think even if i do get an offer for clinical sciences and don't get any for medicine this yr...im just gonna try and get the grades at the end of the year and reapply with a year out and lots more experience! seems more logical although some people think differently.....
