How is University Hospital of North Staffordshire?

    Hi everyone,

I am considering accepting the foundation jobs at University Hospital of North Staffordshire and at Mid Staffordshire General Hospitals.

However, I, as being Birmingham med student, have never been there and therefore would like to ask how are they.

Are they big hospitals with good facilities and so on? Would you mind giving me a bit of introduction on how is it really like? How is A&E dept?

I am trying to look on internet but uhns was down when I accessed it. Thanks a lot for your help.

If you are in Birmingham, I suggest you jump on the M6 for 35 minutes and come take a look.

It is a large hospital, I think the 3rd largest teaching hospital in England, but I could quite easily be mistaken.

What specifically would you like to know, as "Are they big hospitals with good facilities and so on?" is really quite vague.

The A&E department there is quite large, and always pretty busy. I have waited in there 3, 4, and 6 hours before.

Thank you very much for your reply. It is very kind of you.

I was planning to go there and take a look myself when I can however, as I will have to reply whether I will accept the job within this week (and the job offer came out yesterday), it is practically impossible for me to go and pay a visit there >_< thanks a lot for the suggestion anyway. I sure will drive there over some weekends and see

What I would like to know really are
    1) how friendly are people around there? Staffs there are approachable etc? (I know it is silly question but I feel the urge to ask still )
    2) Do you happen to know if FY2 doctors will have chance to have accommodation on site?
    3) What is the reputation for teaching and training there? (and also do medical students like having placements there?)

I hope you don't mind answering my questions. Thanks a lot for your help again crog80

Hi, I'm a 4th year...and I think the hospital is getting there for teaching. Having studied at Birmingham Uni before, obviously not a patch on the city lifestyle and the Bull Ring, but then again the City Hospital and QE are both renowned for being shite.

Have you been told what rotation you are on and on what wards? I can probably give more specific advice. On the whole I think it'd be a good thing. Most of the F1's and F2's that have taught us are from Birmingham.

Thank you for your answers Tiny

Yea I have been told that next year as F1, I will be at Mid Stafford Hospital doing Rheumatology, General medicine + EAU and General Surgery + GI. In my F2 year, the rotations I will have are at University Hospital of North Stafford and they are Academic Rheumatology, A&E and GP. Not sure what wards I will be though.

It would be great if you can give me more specific advice on those areas. Thank you so much really .

PS. do you know if F1/F2 doctors are provided with accommodation at all next year and the year after?

    Hiya

Yes, accomodation is provided to some people right next to the hospital. Only thing is, i'm wondering whether you will actually be based in the City General when on Rheumatology? The thing is, we just finished our rheumatology firm, and it was based in the haywood hospital, which is in Burslem, a good 20 min drive away. Great place and nice wards..but a bit out of the way really. GI is great, we had a firm there last year and the consultants were great, got on well with both as one of them operated on my better half.
