    Hi

I went to the visit day on the 12th and checked out the accomodation.. went to the one really close to the med school (barnes i think).. that one was really nice but very expensive for en suite. I thought the next best one was lindsay which is where i'll go if given the choice.

    hey all,

I visited the keele accomo on the 12th. Being honest, its not that fantastic. I do agree with the comment fo Lord82 (on the other thread). The Barnes X is brilliant but the other halls aren't that good. The Barnes bring really nice and modern, inevitably costs a bomb. I would think that this being the best accomo by far there is probably a lot of competition for the rooms!! so will be difficult to get hold off.

On viewing the accomo, i was informed on two differnet occasions that it would not be possible to state a preference when applying for the accomo (only case for 1st yr). Apparently, you can only state the type of room you want eg. basic, basic with sink or en suite. After this you are allocated a room randomly in any suitable hall. The students i talked to stated that you can only choose the hall you want after the first year and the uni willl ty and meet your requirements and preference.

Nevertheless, other unis dont have such a friendly group of staff, brilliant med school and clinical centre.

    Hope this helps.

best wishes for you all. Enjoy EASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heya - I'm a current first yr med student at Keele, and thought you might appreciate a bit more info about accommodation.
First of all, you won't get put in Barnes X block (I don't know anyone in there - its usually the first ensuite accom to go when current students are choosing their next yrs accom). Ensuite people usually get put in Lindsay Court, Holly Cross and the Oaks - I've visited them all, and I think Holly Cross is probably the nicest. However, I can recommend standard rooms. I put down a room with a wash basin, as did a lot of my friends, and we all ended up in our third choice accom - either ensuite or standard room, but I wouldn't change my accom for the world (I live in Lindsay Hall). The best thing about having to share a bathroom and toliet with other people is that you get to know them really well, and the people you live with are very likely to become your best friends - esp if you live with some other medics. We've made our corridor (yes, I do mean our corridor) our home, with pics, posters, and random things dotted around, and a lot of people who have visited us from their ensuite accom have said how our halls are much more like home, and more exciting, than theirs - although, of course, this depends on the people you live with, but I have spoken to very few people who aren't living with their hall mates again next yr. Granted, the halls aren't the poshest, but who cares, when you can make them your home with posters and pics of nights out, and the people you live with are the greatest fun. The dodgiest accom on campus atm is probably Horwood X and Y block, cos they are the only ones that haven't been refurbished - and I have a feeling you won't get put there, cos I know I'm going to be there with my friends, as are some non-medical final yr students, so don't worry - your halls will be suitable for a student, and you will manage to have fun wherever you are. If any of you have got any other questions about any part of life at Keele and medicine, send me an email to fiona_e_ross@hotmail.com, and I'll answer them.

Looking forward to seeing you all in Sept

    Fi

Enjoy Barnes block whilst you can, because there is no way you're getting in those. Do you enjoy Russian Roulette? If you do, you'll be OK...because it's all a lottery. Put down you want en suite, and you'll get standard...put down you want a basin...you'll get nothing....put down a room, and you'll get a cardboard box.

In my opinion Holly Cross is the best, but also one of the most expensive. As Fiona said (Hiya) Horewood is poor. It's labelled Cell Block H, and I suppose you can figure out why. Hawthorne's are OK, but quite a distance awa. I think Lindsay is OK, but I know some people have to share a kitchen between like 12+ people.......and I wouldn't like it if a Mars bar went missing. Good luck.

Make good friends with your coridoor, sharing a kitchen can be a good thing as you mix and meet people socially over food which is nice.

A mate of mine is in Horwood and really enjoys it, the facilities are basic but they share a kitchen and large bathroom between 5 girls. These seem a good option if in the 2nd year you get 5 mates together you wanna live with in the same hall, as the commaradere makes up for the hall. I mean it aint that bad, and it's cheap, but hey it's all part of the student dream!
