Gamsat Ireland 2010
Hey guys. How'd ye get on?
I thought it was pretty damn hard truth be told.
Section 1 was alright but that patrilocal, natrilocal stuff was rubbish. Passages were quite long but they were worded nicely enough.
Section 2 wasnt so bad- i suppose if I had prepared myself more for the timing I would have been alright
Section 3. Yikes! Tougher that any practise ones I've done! A lot of the bio was ok, but apart from that i was best guessing. Plus timing went a bit to the wayside.
Guess i'll worry about it in May!

I feel the same way
The martifocal stuff used some bs notation, we study that kind of thing in biomed and we use a standardised notation that is really simple
Science was tough, the physics was ok, found the graphs a bit abstract in the bio, the chem was the same old ding dong
I did the gamsat in London a few months back, this time round I thought sec1 was a bit easier and sec3 was alot harder
Can I ask you how many people were at ur venue? There was about 80 in cork
Anyone want to make a few cutoff predictions?

Yeah the graphs were pretty tough I remember one in particula about adults and larva and oxegen sats that I hadnt a clue for!
Wow, only 80. Couple of hundred in Dublin for sure. I was in the exam hall, but there were two( i think!) other exam rooms.
Cut offs? Hmm- higher this year maybe with the mad rush to go into college due to there being no jobs!

The following is an article written by an Irish Medical School Application, it concerns his predictions for the GAMSAT cutoffs in 2010:
The two colleges I applied for in the UK; St. Georges went from 62 to 60, and Nottingham went from 58 to 60, so the rush for Med doesn't seem to have started in the UK which would be a good predictor for Ireland. Thank god for our high fees keeping all the Brits out! I don’t want to create a false sense of confidence for you or for myself, but I would argue that the cut-offs will come down for 2 reasons, before the introduction of gem there were a lot of people who wanted to do Med later in life, most of these people who are up to the standard have gotten in by now, thus clearing a back log of candidates and secondly the 55 new places (ucc 5, ul 5, rcsi 5, ucd 35), considering this my prediction is:
RCSI 60
UCC 59
UCD 58
UL 57
The gamsat scores reflect a percentile rank. So if this year as people claim there are about 200 more applicants (this goes against the reports of numbers from Cork and Limerick, but could still be achieved in Dublin alone), lets subtract 50 from the 200 so as to eliminate 3rd year college students who only intend to apply for 2011 entry and those who have come over from the UK who wouldn't dream of studying in Ireland due to expenses. We are left with 150, a score of 57 reflects around the 65th percentile, so of these 150, 52.5 will make the lowest cut-off or better, the half person probably has more important issues to deal with at the moment and will wait until 2011 before applying. The increased supply has outstripped the increased demand! Other factors that I haven't accounted for are people who don't get a 2:1, people who get cold feet, people who take a year out and Irish people going for the UK and Oz, and don't forget the Vets!
The above predictions are based on:
A. Logical argument
B. Misinterpretated Data
C. Wishful Thinking
D. The ramblings of a drunkard

Hi guys
I found sI a LOT harder than last year
and sIII is a tough one to call because, on one hand, I found it easier as I had more science study done than last year. On the other hand, it was tough and not a lot of O-O-Chem which I had concentrated on so hmmm...
On the whole if I can bring up last year's score by even two I am hoping to be ok for a Dublin spot
Anyhoo I sat in RCSI, in the small room, about 40 in there and in the other small room too.
I think numbers were definitely down this year. But, people might be putting in UK or past Ireland results sooo.... not going to think about all that til I get results and see what I'm dealing with!!

Overall I felt it was ok. I thought section 1 had a lot of heavy reading in it compared to the UK last Sept. I didn't finish it, but think I did more than I did in UK. The section 2 essays were grand too. The science part contained a lot of graphy biology, and the chemistry was a bit of mare for me.
My over all sense is that I might improve in Sec. I and II but don't really think I'll improve in Section III. Anyways gonna forget about it now until May.
I was in the Exam Hall in RCSI, big crowd in there (200-300), but I'm having trouble picturing the room right now :-P)
Best of luck everyone. I'm going to go to the open evening in Limerick on Thursday!Last edited by MentalNote; 03-05-2010 at 06:47 PM.
