Anyone here from Singapore?

Hi. Would be great if any Singaporeans here could give a shout.

I'm Singaporean, and currently 1st year Clinical student at Cambridge.

Hi Senior,

I'm from Singapore too, currentlyserving ns, but applying to uk med for 2005 entry. applying to GKT, bham, Manchester and Glasgow. So far only heard from bham.. any idea how the timescale is like? How was it for you? I believe Cambridge does interviews in Spore right? Well for bham i'll have to fly over.. what about the rest? I seriously wonder...

How's it like studying med in uk? Have u ever compared the syllabus and methods of teaching with students in nus med? Is it as competitive as in Spore?

Dili

Oxbridge does interviews in Singapore, but for the rest of the Medical Schools, you definitely have to fly over for the interview, as far as I am aware.

I intuitively feel that it is not as competitive as it is in Singapore. Syllabi and styles in Singapore are rather similar to that in Oxbridge; the London medical school teaching styles can be rather varied.I'm not sure about Bham, Glasgow and Manchester I'm afraid.

By competitive, I assume you refer to getting in? In terms of competitiveness among peers in med school, it is.

I applied and was accepted into NUS med in 2001, but turned it down. (My grades were 4As, GP A2, Chinese A1, 2 S paper merits) I personally didn't find it extremely competitive then, but perhaps things have changed now due to the new Dean and new admissions process. All I had to do then was fill in an application form, and then go for an interview. Having said that, I had a few friends who did better than me and were rejected.

My younger brother got in last year though, via the new scheme. He had 4 As, GP A2, Chinese A1, no S papers.

The new selection process involves an application, shortlisted candidates then take an essay 'exam', attend 2 interviews - one by a student panel and another by the deanery.

Do you know if it is the same process for international students?
Why did you turn NUS down?
Could you please ask your brother what kind of questions were asked in the interview? I have a good feeling i will get called for an interview but interviews always scare me and my communication and expression skills are zilch.i have this lack of confidence but I'm improving.

sorry about all the questions.

i applied to NUS online today but just as i pressed submit application my internet disconnected and i didn't get my application number. so i filled it in again and they said i can't cos i already applied. talk about bad luck at the beginning of all this.

I don't know if it's the same process, but I do know that the bond for government service is longer, i.e. 6 years rather than 5.

I turned NUS down because I wanted an overseas university education, and plus I was fortunate enough to be sponsored for it!

From what I remember, he was asked simple questions like "what was the latest book you read" in the interview with the med students and allied healthcare professionals. The essay topic was about a problem you faced in your life and how you handled it.

I hope that helps.

Yes; and yes. I'm not aware of a scheme whereby international students can pay full unsubsidised fees and hence eliminate the liability of government service post graduation.
