yes, so i was told. the FY1/2 is pretty much guaranteed. after that you would need a tier 1 visa, which is not hard to get if you hold a medical degree as its based on income potential, level of skill associated with job and all that fun stuff. the visa system underwent an overhaul recently. it used to be called highly-skilled work permit... or something.

Keep in mind UK docs don't earn nearly as much as canadian docs (in terms of standard of living)

but yea I have the option of staying since im a UK citizen... but I think I will write the USMLE and try for a US based residency and maybe even give CaRMS a shot too, if that doesnt work out I can always train in UK. Ah dual citizenship... finally coming in handy...

the stuff about F1/2 and needing a visa for specialty training is correct... but I'm not sure about the difficulty of getting the visa since training spots have been so limited in UK for the past 2 yrs

    Hi,

You might want to double-check this, but in order to get a Tier 1 visa, you need to hold a Masters degree or PhD....so a regular MBBS would not be enough. ...and I'm not sure where Tier 1 visas fall in the pecking order (it might be UK/EEA....and then if there are any spots, Tier 1 (but I don't know for sure).

A Tier 2 visa, won't really work because you will only be offered a specialty training post if one can't be filled by a UK or EEA citizen....and I imagine ALL training posts will be taken by UK/EEA citizens.

....so you're left with non training posts which can't be filled (ie undesirable location/specialty) and no chance of career progression.

I'm in the process of applying for specialty training posts now.....interviewees are required to bring UK/EU passports, proof of appropriate visa to the interviews.

If you're Canadian, make sure you have a sure/viable UK training option, because going back to Canada is difficult, expensive...and if you're lucky, you might get a family spot in the woods.

wel, i have spoken to the border agency earlier this year and they did say MBBS is considered. but then it seems the ruling changed in april, again. guess they are still ironing out the new point system as the issue is still under discussion between the court of appeal and the house of lords. but i can say i was told that MBBS is considered when i called.

and as to residency, it really depends on your app. if you did your undergrad in canada and have made sufficient connections, its not hard to get a decent spot. one of the neurosurgeon i worked with did his undergrad at UBC, med degree in ireland and landed a neurosurg residency in toronto, which is pretty WTF for an IMG. plus, canada is softening the rulings on IMG and matching since the doctor shortage is getting out of hands thanks to some statisticians saying less doctors are needed back in the 80s.

and if all else fails i guess 1 year taught-masters? i was planning to do a phd after mbbs anyway.

    What are my chances?

Can someone explain to me what the requirements are for International students who want to apply to UK medical schools. I am a canadian citizen. I have just graduated from a accredited Canadian University with an Honours B.Sc and a GPA of 65%. What are my chances of getting in? I haven't written the UKCAT as of yet. Someone please tell me. Thank You.

Have any Canadians applied to King's? I received the following e-mail

    Dear Zoya,

Would you be able to send me a transcript of your high school diploma transcript, and
let me know if you studied both Biology and Chemistry to Advanced level in high school?
This would aid the assessment of your application.

    Best wishes,

    Carys Barbour
    Admissions Assistant

I had read this before but I had assumed that Advanced Level meant up until 12th grade. Have any Canadians received an interview with their high school qualifications? I have also taken Chemistry and Biology in first year university.
    High school grade: 90%
    UKCAT: 647.5
    UCAS: Oct 15
    Choices:

    HYMS (5 year)- rej 11/06 w/ interview
UEA (5 year)-- interview Feb 18- Offer March 1st- FIRM!
    Birmingham (5 year)-rejected March 12
It's been quite a cycle but off to medical school come Sept '10!!

Ring them Zoya and sort it out over the phone, best thing to do.

A.S. I rang King's the other day to ask for a re-arrangement for my interview and they told me all international applicants were being interviewed in January so i wouldn't be able to rearrange for then. They sent my interview offer three weeks before the interview so don't worry just yet.

Oh yah for anyone who got rejected without a reason given, you are allowed to e-mail the uni's asking for feedback and some uni's give you a nice two page essay on why you didn 't get in and some will tell you in one sentence, but they will reply .
